Summary of Program

The Lighthouse exists to support unhoused community members in Central Oregon by helping to identify and acquire the necessary documentation, resources, support, and self-sufficiency needed to procure and maintain housing. Additionally, we help people connect with job training, employment opportunities, and assistance with mental/physical health needs. This work is done through onsite case management and the additional support of resource providers and community partners throughout Central Oregon. We have 100 beds for overnight use and a day-use area that supports up to 60 participants. Additionally, we offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as access to basic hygiene and clean clothing.

Summary of Position

The Overnight Safety Monitor will protect and enhance the safety, security, and integrity of The Lighthouse Navigation Center, specifically focusing on its overnight participants. Under the supervision of the Associate Director and Director of Navigation Services, this role involves providing overnight services to The Lighthouse shelter guests, maintaining overnight watch and patrols around The Lighthouse property and neighborhood, addressing safety concerns, and collaborating with relevant personnel to manage security issues.

The Overnight Safety Monitor will perform their duties and responsibilities to care for the needs of The Lighthouse participants, enhance the fulfillment of The Lighthouse mission, collaborate well with all community partners and neighbors, and provide a safe and healing environment for everyone at The Lighthouse.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide a welcoming and safe environment at the Lighthouse Navigation Center.
  • Perform overnight intake and registration for new guests in a thorough and welcoming manner.
  • Maintain a visible presence by standing watch and patrolling the property to monitor safety.
  • Engage individuals whose conduct may raise safety concerns, providing guidance and escalating to law enforcement when necessary.
  • Utilize de-escalation and trauma-informed engagement techniques to address situations with kindness and concern.
  • Guide participants in adhering to shelter guidelines, including Relational Agreements, Good Neighbor Agreements, and other safety-related policies.
  • Assist with providing services such as meals, showers, laundry, hygiene supplies, and first aid as needed.
  • Keep all areas of the shelter clean and orderly, particularly the dorms, bedding storage, and food service areas.
  • Participate in our team meeting. Utilize team communication channels effectively and with professional communication.
  • Complete required online and in-person SHM training.

  • The candidate should be capable of engaging in physical activity as needed to ensure safety and security.
  • Interpersonal Interaction: Engaging with participants and staff, often requiring de-escalation skills and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Emotional Resilience: Maintaining a calm demeanor in high-stress situations.
  • Environment: Exposure to outdoor elements during patrols and potentially odorous environments due to guests’ circumstances.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or training in social services, security, or a related field is a plus.
  • Previous experience in a similar role, preferably in a shelter or social service setting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a diverse community.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care and de-escalation techniques.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour
