GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
To work collaboratively with program team members and to support the teacher by assisting with classroom instruction and lesson planning for students who are ages 18-22 and receive special education services in the post-high setting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
The minimum performance expectations include, but not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
- Supports the teacher with lesson preparation and creating instructional materials;
- Providing individual and small group instruction and facilitates group work;
- Prepares learning environment for lessons and helps organize materials;
- Assists with administrative tasks, such as record keeping and daily schedule;
- Differentiates instruction to provide various learning experiences for all students;
- Communicates with teacher and team members about student progress;
- Provides coaching in appropriate skills necessary for adult living related to functional skills, self-advocacy, communication, community participation, leisure, and social skills.
- Assist with the personal care needs of the students, as necessary;
- Independently carry out particular routine aspects of the program such as transporting and supervising students in various community sites.
- Develop, facilitate and gather data collection related to individual goals in collaboration with the program teacher(s);
- Assist program teacher(s) in maintaining a program environment that fosters a safe and positive culture for all students and staff;
- Assist in the proper maintenance of students' records;
- Maintain pleasant and orderly classroom environment (e.g., maintains instructional materials, designs bulletin boards, assists teacher and/or students in clean-up activities, etc.);
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Reliable attendance and prompt arrival time. Ability to work cooperatively with others in a positive manner; ability to learn and use specialized instructional/management techniques as needed; ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, community partners, parents, administrators, and staff.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Demonstrates command of Standard English, both spoken and written Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals. Ability to write reports. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, parents, students, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred; Associates Degree or Two years of post-secondary education in related field considered; Two years of experience with related population/field

Candidate must possess good moral character.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Duties performed typically in post–high setting, which is located in a program off of a school campus. Part of this setting includes a dining hall, gym, recreation center, and community sites. While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hand, and talk or hear; lifting up to 50 pounds and other limited physical activities are required. Movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices are required. Assistance with personal care needs, which include toileting support is also be required.
