Job Title: Groundskeeper
Department: Maintenance & Operations
Reports To: Maintenance Coordinator
Work Schedule: Year-Round, Full-Time (Typically 40 hours/week)
Position Summary
The Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining the exterior grounds of all district properties to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. This includes mowing, landscaping, snow removal, irrigation maintenance, and general upkeep of athletic fields, playgrounds, parking lots, and other outdoor facilities. In addition, the Groundskeeper assists with general maintenance tasks as needed and is the lead for supervising the seasonal high school summer Grounds Crew.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Groundskeeper Responsibilities (Primary Focus):
- Maintain lawns, fields, flower beds, trees, and shrubbery across all district properties.
- Operate and maintain various landscaping and grounds equipment (e.g., mowers, trimmers, tractors, utility vehicles, and snowblowers).
- Perform weed control, fertilization, aeration, and pest management according to district and state guidelines.
- Install, monitor, and repair irrigation systems.
- Remove snow and ice from walkways, entrances, and parking areas during winter months.
- Prepare and maintain athletic fields for games and practices, including lining fields, turf care, and seasonal setup/takedown.
- Regularly inspect playgrounds and grounds for safety hazards and address concerns promptly.
- Regularly inspect lawn equipment and perform necessary repairs.
Summer Grounds Crew Supervision:
- Plan and coordinate summer maintenance tasks with input from the Maintenance Coordinator.
- Train, supervise, and lead a team of high school students (Grounds Crew) during the summer months.
- Ensure student workers follow all safety protocols and district policies while completing assigned tasks efficiently.
General Maintenance Support (Secondary Focus):
- Assist with minor building repairs, custodial tasks, and maintenance work as directed.
- Participate in seasonal projects such as snow removal, pressure washing, or special event setup.
- Report building or equipment issues to the Maintenance Coordinator promptly.
- Support other maintenance personnel on larger repairs or projects as needed.
Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Idaho driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to operate and maintain outdoor equipment safely.
- Experience with landscaping, groundskeeping, or outdoor maintenance.
- Ability to work independently and lead others, especially student workers.
- Physical ability to perform strenuous outdoor labor in various weather conditions.
Preferred:
- Previous experience in a school district or public facility environment.
- Knowledge of irrigation systems and turf care best practices.
- Experience supervising or mentoring young workers.
- Experience servicing lawn equipment
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Work is primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, with exposure to loud equipment, chemicals, and physically demanding tasks.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks that require bending, climbing, walking, and standing for long periods.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Maintenance Coordinator based on job knowledge, initiative, teamwork, dependability, safety, and ability to supervise the summer crew.
