Chamber of Commerce Director

POSITION SUMMARY

The Chamber of Commerce Director is a highly visible, community-focused position responsible for supporting and strengthening Sheldon's business community through member engagement, events, marketing, promotions, and community partnerships.

The Chamber Director serves as a key connection between SCDC, local businesses, volunteers, community organizations, residents, and visitors while working closely with the Executive Director to advance SCDC's mission and priorities.

MEMBER & BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT

· Develop and maintain strong relationships with SCDC members through regular communication, personal outreach, and business visits.

· Lead Chamber membership recruitment, retention, and engagement efforts.

· Proactively identify member needs, concerns, opportunities, and ideas and communicate appropriate information to the Executive Director and SCDC team.

· Connect businesses with SCDC programs, resources, networking opportunities, training, and other available resources.

· Welcome and engage new businesses and help connect them with the Sheldon business community.

· Coordinate business ribbon cuttings, groundbreakings, grand openings, open houses, anniversaries, and other business recognition activities.

· Maintain accurate membership information and assist with tracking membership recruitment, retention, participation, and engagement.

· Develop new programs and initiatives that enhance the value of SCDC membership and encourage greater member participation.

EVENTS, PROGRAMS & PROMOTIONS

· Plan, coordinate, promote, and evaluate Chamber events, including Sheldon Celebration Days, Hot Dog Day, Crazy Days, Children's and Golden Egg Hunt, Christmas Kick-Off, and other Chamber programs and promotions.

· Recruit, organize, communicate with, and recognize volunteers for Chamber committees, events, and programs.

· Develop event timelines, budgets, sponsorship opportunities, marketing plans, and volunteer needs.

· Build and maintain relationships with event sponsors and ensure appropriate sponsor recognition.

· Evaluate events and programs based on attendance, financial performance, member participation, community impact, and overall effectiveness.

· Identify new events and promotions that increase community participation, support local businesses, and generate Chamber revenue.

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS

· Develop and implement Chamber marketing and communication efforts that promote SCDC members, Chamber programs, community events, shopping local, and Sheldon.

· Create and coordinate marketing materials for Chamber events, programs, promotions, and initiatives.

· Provide leadership for SCDC social media platforms by developing engaging, timely, and professional content.

· Assist with Chamber Corner content for the weekly SCDC Insider, monthly community calendar, monthly job board, and other regular SCDC membership communications.

· Identify new marketing opportunities, platforms, and communication tools that increase awareness and engagement with SCDC and the Sheldon community.

· Promote positive stories about Sheldon businesses, organizations, events, residents, and community accomplishments.

· Maintain consistent and professional SCDC branding across Chamber communications, events, and promotions.

DOWNTOWN & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

· Develop and support programs and promotions designed to increase business activity, community engagement, and customer traffic throughout Sheldon, with particular attention to the downtown business district.

· Regularly engage with downtown and community businesses to identify needs, challenges, opportunities, and ideas.

· Work with the Executive Director on strategies to strengthen Sheldon's retail, restaurant, service, entertainment, and commercial sectors.

· Assist the Executive Director, as needed, with business recruitment, expansion, and retention strategies.

· Build partnerships with businesses, schools, nonprofit organizations, community groups, and other organizations that support Chamber and community goals.

· Represent SCDC positively and professionally at community events, meetings, and activities.

· Continually bring forward innovative ideas that create positive exposure, energy, activity, and opportunities for Sheldon.

Administrative & Organizational Responsibilities

· Develop and maintain the annual Chamber activity budget and monitor event revenues and expenses.

· Serve as secretary for the Marketing Committee and provide Chamber updates at monthly meetings.

· Collaborate with Executive Director and coordinate the annual SCDC Golf Tournament.

· Maintain appropriate Chamber, membership, event, and sponsorship records.

· Maintain confidentiality of non-public information.

· Work collaboratively with the Executive Director, SCDC staff, board members, committees, and volunteers.

· Strong volunteer recruitment, participation, and recognition.

· Effective and consistent marketing and communication of Chamber, member, and community activities.

· Growth in event sponsorships and other non-dues revenue opportunities.

· Development and implementation of new programs, promotions, and initiatives that benefit SCDC members and the Sheldon community.

· Positive relationships with businesses, community organizations, volunteers, residents, and visitors.

· Continued efforts to strengthen Sheldon's downtown and overall business environment.

Specific annual goals and measurable performance objectives may be established in cooperation with the Executive Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

· High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education in business, marketing, communications, community development, or a related field preferred.

· Relevant experience in business, marketing, sales, event management, customer relations, or community development preferred.

· Excellent communication, public relations, customer service, and relationship-building skills.

· Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, events, and deadlines.

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with social media, digital marketing, and related technology preferred.

· Ability to work independently, take initiative, solve problems, and work effectively as part of a team.

· Creative, energetic, and comfortable representing SCDC publicly.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

· Must reside within the City of Sheldon, Iowa. If not a Sheldon resident at the time of hire, the successful candidate will be required to establish residency within Sheldon within an agreed-upon timeframe.

· Maintain a professional appearance appropriate to the position, event, and community setting.

· Possess a valid Iowa driver's license and meet SCDC's insurance requirements.

· Ability to lift 20 pounds frequently and up to 35 pounds occasionally without assistance.

· Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends for Chamber events, meetings, and community activities, with schedule flexibility as appropriate.

· Maintain confidentiality of all non-public business, organizational, personnel, and community development information.

· Willingness to perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
