What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Assistant/Inspector I - Highway position at Shelby County?
- Provides inspection services, testing, and documentation for road and bridge construction projects.
- Investigates and documents citizen's concerns regarding roadway and drainage issues.
- Inspects County roadways and associated infrastructure and produces reports and determines need for repairs or maintenance.
- Provides inspection and documentation for maintenance activities performed by County and contracted forces.
- Maintains or assists in maintaining files and drawings.
- Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervision.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Four years' experience in progressively complex inspection and management activities in highway construction, surveying, material testing, or computer aided drafting OR two or more years of college course work in engineering and technical training in computer aided drafting and design and surveying and two or more years of experience in progressively complex inspection and management activities in highway construction, surveying, material testing, or computer aided drafting (4 years or more combined of education and experience).
- Valid driver's license.
- Willing to work outdoors and in extreme weather conditions.
- Willing to work nonstandard hours and more than 40 hours per week if necessary.
- Certification as a Traffic Control Inspector, Nuclear Safety, Roadway Technician and Certified Concrete Technician from the Alabama Department of Transportation.
- Experience and proficiency using Microstation including the ability to produce complex plans and design drawings from engineering sketches and notes.
- Experience and proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel
- Experience and proficiency using ALDOT's Construction and Materials Management System (CAMMS)
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily outdoors with extremes of cold and heat. Job site visits may include dust, uneven terrain, and proximity to moving construction equipment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is light in nature and requires a significant amount of walking and standing and a negligible amount of lifting and bending.
WRITTEN/ORAL/ PERFORMANCE EXAMINATIONS
No written or performance examination will be required for this position. Applicants are screened and certified based on an evaluation of their education, training, experience and other requirements as outlined in this Position Announcement and denoted on their Job Application and responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire.
