Provides medical nutrition therapy, group education, individual counseling, and nutrition-service evaluation for eligible participants and families enrolled in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program at Health Department clinics. Provides professional guidance to nutritionists and peer counselors and ensures nutrition services comply with established WIC policies and standards.
Pay Grade: 52

Shelby County Resident Disclaimer
All employees hired after September 1, 1986, must be residents of Shelby County and shall continue to reside in the County as a condition of their employment. The residency requirement shall not apply to certain public safety/civil service employees. This means exemption from this policy is in effect for the following departments and positions: (1) Sheriff Deputy Patrol Officers, Deputy Jailers and Dispatchers, employed by the Sheriff Department, (2) Correction Officers employed by the Division of Corrections, (3) Firefighters, Paramedics and Dispatchers employed by the Shelby County Fire Department. Minimum Qualifications
- Three (3) years of experience as a registered dietitian, in which one (1) year in an administrative capacity; AND
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in dietetics or nutrition; AND
- Must be a Registered Dietitian in the state of Tennessee.
- PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assesses participants' nutritional needs and collaborates with healthcare professionals to develop appropriate nutrition-care plans.
- Provides individual counseling, group education, and medical nutrition therapy to WIC participants and families.
- Educates participants regarding therapeutic or modified diets prescribed by authorized healthcare providers.
- Provides professional direction and technical guidance to nutritionists and peer counselors.
- Reviews and approves nutrition-education materials used in WIC clinics.
- Screens applicants and participants for program eligibility in accordance with established WIC policies and procedures.
- Determines eligibility for therapeutic food packages and provides related instructions consistent with WIC requirements.
- Collects and analyzes nutrition data and develops educational materials and resources.
- Provides nutrition consultation and technical assistance to Health Department staff and other professionals.
- Represents the Health Department at community meetings, outreach activities, and special events.
- Maintains accurate records and prepares required reports.
- Performs other related duties as required or directed.
KSAs
- Knowledge of human nutrition and its relationship to health, disease prevention, and disease management.
- Knowledge of public health nutrition practices, WIC requirements, and nutrition-care principles.
- Knowledge of educational methods used in individual and group nutrition counseling.
- Ability to assess nutritional needs and analyze and interpret nutrition-related data.
- Ability to develop care plans, educational materials, and program reports.
- Ability to provide professional guidance and communicate effectively with participants, employees, healthcare providers, and community partners.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and similar County software applications.
Special Requirements
- Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license by the date of employment.
- Must have access to an operable automobile and meet Shelby County requirements for automobile insurance on the date of employment.
- Must be able to travel among Health Department clinics and attend community meetings and special events.
- Must be a Registered Dietitian in the state of Tennessee.
- Must maintain all required certifications and licenses throughout the duration of employment.
