What are the responsibilities and job description for the Equipment Operator I/Laborer position at Shelby County Fiscal Court?
POSITION PURPOSE
Under the general supervision of the Solid Waste Director, this position performs a combination of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled work related to solid waste operations, providing customer service at the recycling facility, and performing general labor to support county services. Additional related duties may be assigned as needed.
Work Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 6:45 AM-3:15 PM
Hourly Pay Range: $19-$21/hr.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
- Operate a backhoe and other equipment necessary for county solid waste services, including single-axle trucks (pickups) and lawn mowers
- Operate vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Maintain cleanliness and proper care of all equipment and vehicles
- Assist customers at the scales and provide courteous customer service
- Help customers unload waste in a safe and professional manner
- Perform duties related to the proper handling and management of solid waste
- Conduct housekeeping and cleaning of the solid waste area and truck garage to maintain safety and cleanliness
- Perform related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid Kentucky Driver’s License
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – Class A
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Unskilled or semi-skilled manual work experience
- 2 Years truck driving experience.
- Operation of variety of hand powered tools
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
2. Knowledge of work-related hazards and applicable safety precautions
3. Ability to recognize equipment operating deficiencies and make minor adjustments
4. Ability to perform moderately heavy to heavy labor for extended periods
5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public
6. Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances and regulations related to operating departmental vehicles
7. Employees in this class will be required to obtain credentials outlined within a reasonable amount of time, or if the employees possess such credentials at the time of hire they will be required to maintain those credentials so long as they are employed in this capacity.

WORKING CONDITIONS PHYSICAL EFFORT:
- Work is performed primarily at a recycling facility and various sites throughout the assigned area
- Ability to sit, stand, stoop, and bend for extended periods
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
OVERTIME REQUIREMENTS: Non-exempt
AVAILABILITY: Regular Shift may be contacted on emergency basis.
