What are the responsibilities and job description for the Forensic Nurse Practitioner position at Shelby County Crime Victims & Rape Crisis Center?
Position Summary
Works under the direction of the CVRCC Director of Nursing to provide comprehensive nursing care to victims of sexual violence.
Pay Grade: 56
Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education
Minimum Qualification
- Two (2) years of experience working in a clinical field; AND
- Graduate of an accredited R.N. program and holds a Master’s degree or higher from an accredited Nursing program; licensed as an R.N. and as an Advanced Practice Nurse with a certificate of fitness for prescribing; and certified through ANCC or AANP as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Preference given to nurse practitioners with Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner certification.
- PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Interviews victims of sexual violence for histories of assault.
- Performs physical exams of adults and children and documents accurately.
- Correctly documents injuries, pertinent physical findings, and child development through clear digital photographs on agency camera.
- Collects evidence from victims.
- Correctly packages this evidence, following standard chain of evidence procedure.
- Provides age appropriate nursing care, regulated by the Tennessee Nurse Practice Act.
- Provides prophylactic treatment for certain STDs and pregnancy, utilizing standard medical protocol.
- Collaborates with the Director of Nursing, hospital clinicians, local Law Enforcement agencies and area victim advocates in the comprehensive care of the sexual assault patient.
- Assists in designing, creating and conducting trainings on CVRCC procedure for various law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, Department of Children’s Services, hospitals and other appropriate community agencies.
- Refers for emergency care and follow-up as appropriate.
- Testifies as an expert witness in Criminal, Juvenile, and Federal Courts.
- Participates in the training of nurses and physicians.
- Maintains confidential case files with appropriate documentation and physical security systems.
- Maintains necessary CEU requirements for RN / ANP licensure and SANE certifications.
- Performs other related duties as required or directed.

- Expert knowledge in the principles of nursing and ability to function independently in a clinical setting.
- Ability to assess victims of sexual violence and determine their physical and psychosocial needs.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with victims, family members, law enforcement, personnel from other agencies, and staff.
- Ability to operate independently and intervene effectively in crisis situations.
- Ability to provide individualized, compassionate, professional, and culturally sensitive care to victims and make appropriate decisions in a timely manner.
- Ability to operate and maintain medical and technological equipment including colposcopies, digital cameras, digital recording systems, alternate light source, and microscopes.
- Ability to provide trauma informed care to victims and individuals from diverse backgrounds and situations.
- Ability to use good judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
- Proficient knowledge of electronic Medical Records, Microsoft Office programs, specifically Word, Excel, and Power Point.
Special Requirements
- Must possess a valid Tennessee Driver’s License or secure one by date of employment.
- Must have daily access to an operable automobile and meet County requirements for automobile insurance as of date of employment.
- Must be able to travel to other clinics and hospitals across the county.
- Must be able to respond effectively to crisis situations.
- Must be accessible 24 hours; 7 days a week. Includes the availability to work any vacant on-call shifts.
- Licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in the state of Tennessee.
