Student Assistance Program (SAP) Counselor Needed
Location: Shelburne Community School

Shelburne Community School (SCS) is seeking a dedicated and qualified Student Assistance Program (SAP) Counselor to provide essential school-based services. This vital role focuses on supporting the well-being and academic success of adolescents by addressing issues related to substance use/abuse, stress, challenging family systems, peers, and personal or school adjustments. The SAP counselor implements comprehensive prevention, education, screening, intervention, and referral services while fostering a supportive atmosphere for student recovery.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide intervention and confidential screening for students struggling with substance use/abuse, stress, and relational issues.
- Offer individual and group counseling sessions on effective techniques for managing stress, peer and family relationships, and substance use issues.
- Deliver educational services and training to staff and the community on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) prevention.
- Support school counselors with teaching weekly Skills for Life classes across grades 5–8.
- Screen and assess adolescents to make effective internal and external referrals to appropriate agencies.
- Provide case management and re-integration support for students entering and returning from substance abuse treatment.
- Actively participate in student support teams and maintain strong working relationships with outside agencies.
- Maintain strict client confidentiality in accordance with federal law (42 CFR Part 2).
The Ideal Candidate Will Possess
- Familiarity with substance abuse prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery methods, alongside a strong working knowledge of adolescent mental health.
- Preferred SAP Counselor Certification, CADC/LADC licensure, or a valid Vermont Professional Educator's License.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to relate effectively to children, adolescents, parents, staff, and community partners.
- Ability to manage stress, resolve conflicts, handle crisis situations, and exercise sound independent judgment.
- Proficiency in computer skills and data-informed problem-solving.
