Sheboygan County is seeking a skilled and safety-minded individuals to join our Highway Department. This role is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and improving the County’s extensive roadway system — including over 2,100 lane-miles of roads — using a wide variety of equipment and techniques in both summer and winter seasons.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate, maintain, and repair County-owned trucks and heavy equipment (plows, graders, loaders, crushers, pavers, etc.).

  • Perform winter road maintenance (snow plowing, salting, snow fence installation, culvert thawing, bridge cleaning).

  • Perform summer road maintenance (paving, crack filling, mowing, brush clearing, ditching, blacktop repair, culvert replacement, road sweeping).

  • Conduct hands-on labor tasks including shoveling, raking, jackhammering, sawing, and concrete work.

  • Safely set up work zones with signs, cones, and message boards; direct traffic and use crash trailers when needed.

  • Perform culvert and bridge inspections; read and interpret construction plans and specs.

  • Operate centerline painting equipment and maintain related documentation.

  • Follow DOT, MSHA, MUTCD, and safety standards at all times.

  • Assist or fill in for supervisors as needed; work independently and make sound field decisions.

  • Maintain and remodel department buildings as needed.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s license, Class A, B, C, D – ability to obtain N endorsement.
  • Understands and effectively carries out oral and written instructions.

Work is performed in a shed and outdoor settings, including but not limited to construction sites.  

  • Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds, but, must be capable of lifting 100 pounds.  
  • A combination of sitting and standing postures may be required, use of hands, ability to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear. 
  • Specific vision abilities required for this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 
  • Ability to regularly work five eight-hour days and/or four ten-hour days and the ability to adapt to working non-standard work hours, including weekends, late evenings, early mornings and holidays. 
  • Ability to work in an environment with occasional exposure to unpleasant odors and non-toxic fumes. 
  • Ability to work in an environment with exposure to adverse temperature and/or humidity extremes.
  • Must be able to operate construction equipment, snow removal equipment, trucks, tools and equipment.

Salary : $48,000 - $60,000
