Location: Fargo, ND

Duration: 4 Months (Start: 7/27)

Type: 1099 Contractor

CompensationSchedule

Pay Rate: $52.50/hr

Overtime: Paid After 40 Hours

Per Diem: $125/Day (7 Days Per Week)

Completion Bonus: $150/month

Pay Frequency: Weekly

Schedule: Monday-Saturday | 12-Hour Days

Approximately 72 Hours Per Week

Join a contractor supporting a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) heavy civil construction project near Fargo, ND. This role will serve as the Site SafetyHealth Officer (SSHO), providing dedicated safety oversight for construction involving an earthen dam, large-scale earthwork, heavy equipment operations, and minor roadway activities in a rural project environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced SSHO with strong EM 385-1-1 knowledge who is comfortable maintaining a highly visible field presence and supporting crews during long-duration shifts on a fast-paced federal construction project.

Required Qualifications

EM 385-1-1 Certification / Training

OSHA 30 Construction Certification

Minimum 5 years of construction industry safety experience

Ability to work Monday-Saturday, 12-hour shifts in an active outdoor construction environment

Preferred Qualifications

Previous Site SafetyHealth Officer (SSHO) experience

USACE or other federal construction project experience

Earthen dam, levee, or heavy civil construction experience

Earthwork and mass excavation safety experience

Competent Person training for excavation and trenching

CHST, ASP, CSP, or other BCSP credential

What You'll Be Doing

  • Serve as the designated SSHO and provide daily onsite safety oversight
  • Implement and enforce the project Accident Prevention Plan (APP)
  • Ensure compliance with EM 385-1-1, OSHA, USACE, and project-specific safety requirements
  • Conduct routine site inspections, safety audits, field observations, and hazard assessments
  • Monitor earthen dam construction, earthmoving, grading, and compaction activities
  • Oversee safety around excavators, dozers, loaders, haul trucks, compactors, and other heavy equipment
  • Monitor excavation, trenching, and changing site conditions
  • Support safe execution of roadway and civil construction activities
  • Review and maintain Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) for project operations
  • Conduct and document required safety meetings and training
  • Lead incident investigations and corrective action implementation
  • Maintain required SSHO documentation, daily reports, inspection records, and compliance documentation
  • Coordinate with project management, field supervision, subcontractors, and USACE representatives
  • Proactively identify hazards and ensure corrective actions are implemented
  • Promote a positive safety culture throughout the project

What Success Looks Like

The ideal candidate is a highly visible, field-focused SSHO who understands the documentation, oversight, and compliance expectations associated with USACE construction projects.

Success in this role requires the ability to effectively implement EM 385-1-1 requirements in the field, maintain accurate APP/AHA and safety documentation, proactively identify hazards associated with earthwork and heavy equipment operations, and build productive relationships with field crews, project leadership, subcontractors, and USACE representatives.
