Summary of Responsibilities

The Environmental Manager performs a variety of complex administrative functions to identify, manage, protect, preserve, and enhance Tribal interests in environmental resources and issues at the direction of the Senior Administrator as funding and jurisdiction allows. Plans, directs, and coordinates activities involved in developing procedures and techniques to address environmental issues. Participates in local, regional, and national meetings to represent Shawnee Tribe interests in a variety of complex environmental issues.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Develops and meets Environmental Department goals and objectives in accordance with federal program requirements and Shawnee Tribe priorities.
• Develops and implements program work plans and procedures.
• Manages department grants, contracts, programs, and budgets.
• Ensures clear and effective policies and procedures in accordance with funding source terms and conditions, regulatory standards and Shawnee Tribe requirements.
• Represents Environmental Department programs and Shawnee Tribe environmental priorities to governmental and non-governmental agencies, organizations, Tribes, staff, and the public.
• Develops and maintains records, reports and documents related to program activities, resource inventories and data. Prepares environmental project feasibility and progress reports.
• Reviews technical aspects programs and priorities, including quality (QA) processes of assigned projects. Reviews project operations to ensure coordination of efforts and timely submission of reports and other documents.
• Analyzes reports to evaluate program effectiveness and budgetary needs.
• Attends meetings, conferences, and trainings as required per funding source(s) or to continue professional development. This position requires frequent travel in order to participate in such events.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelors Degree in a related field is preferred, but the successful candidate must have a minimum of 5 years of professional work experience demonstrating the required capabilities.
• Ability to manage multiple projects at a time, maintaining both an overall strategic vision while performing detail-oriented tasks.
• Ability to work with all levels of employees and citizens in the community to communicate effectively with various participants in joint initiatives.
• Skill in making presentations to groups.
• Skill in adapting information verbally and in writing for a variety of audiences and media.
• Ability to use discretion and good judgment in handling sensitive information and issues.
• Proficiency with administering complex databases and projects.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision, to begin projects independently and to bring projects to conclusion on a timely basis.
• Able to work a flexible schedule, travel to distant communities, and lead programs, as necessary.
• Ability to resolve conflicts in a constructive manner.
• Adherence to appropriate standards of conduct and ethics, including confidentiality, integrity and honesty.
• A team mindset in carrying out job functions, including following directives; adapting to changing work environments; cooperating and working respectfully with others; participating in pro-active problem solving; regularly attending and participating in meetings as required.
• Experience working with indigenous peoples, Native American Tribes, or Native American communities.
• Skill in maintaining a high level of discipline and morale in all interactions with others, internally and externally.
• Ability to exercise independent and sound judgment.

Additional Requirements:

• Successfully pass pre-employment Drug Screen and adhere to a Random Drug Screen policy.
• Possess a valid Driver’s License, have proof of Liability Insurance and be insurable.
• Maintain any training and credential requirements as per policy and procedure.
• Successfully pass Criminal Background Checks.
