Position Title: Communications Manager

Department: Communications

Reports to: Chief Human Resources Officer

Classification Status: Non-Exempt

Summary of Responsibilities:

The Communications Manager, under the supervision of the Chief Human Resources Officer, will oversee the daily functions of the Tribe’s Communications department. This role includes assisting with the development and implementation of the communications strategy, managing the website and public relations efforts to effectively convey Shawnee Tribal objectives, monitoring and reporting on key performance indicators, coordinating technical planning for live productions, and fulfilling additional tasks as assigned. The Communications Manager will work with tribal administration, leadership, and various departments, serving as the primary contact for communication needs across a range of programs, strategic initiatives, and projects.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with other communications team members, tribal administration, leadership, and various tribal departments to create, execute, and oversee communication strategies for the Shawnee Tribe.
  • Develops and distributes print and digital communications on behalf of Tribal Administration and/or the Office of the Chief, including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, press releases, websites, social media, signage, memos, speeches, audio, photo and video.
  • Makes recommendations on communications policy for approval and implementation.
  • Participates in the analysis of campaign performance and conducts post-campaign critiques.
  • Responsible for the development and distribution of all print and electronic communications, including, but not limited to; newsletters, brochures, newspapers, website, and social media.
  • Provide assistance to tribal management regarding internal communications.
  • Oversight of news content, editing, and production for publication of the tribal newspaper and/or e-newsletters.
  • Submits for preapproval of all news content for review as required and prior to publication.
  • Provides the coordination of preservation of all media.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, monthly staff meetings, and other meetings as needed or as directed.
  • Travel as necessary to meet the needs and demands of the Tribe.
  • Adheres to all policies of the Tribe.
  • Excellent verbal, written, communication and overall people skills are necessary to perform tasks related to this position.
  • May be assigned other duties and responsibility as necessary for administration of tribal communications, programs, or operations.
  • Attend Tribal Council meetings as required.
  • Performs related work as required in the interest of the Shawnee Tribe and Tribal Council.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college or university in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Business, or another relevant field.
  • Three to five years of professional experience in Public Relations or Journalism with experiencing including news writing, editing, web content production & management, audio/video production, or some combination of these.
  • Knowledge of public media standards and values.
  • Demonstrated experience acting as a spokesperson.

Preferred Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with the following or similar software: Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro), Dropbox, Trello, Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with visual design principles, video, photo, and/or audio production and editing principles.
  • Experience in organizing live events, including handling Audio-Visual (AV) equipment and more.
  • Skilled in establishing realistic goals and objectives, analyzing situations accurately, and adopting and implementing efficient, effective courses of action.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with tribal citizens and their families and the public on an individual and group basis, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide and follow written and verbal direction.
  • Ability to manage and maintain security of confidential data and information.
  • Ability to exercise independent and sound judgment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and days as necessary to meet the needs and demands of the Tribe.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with indigenous peoples, Native American Tribes, or Native American communities.
  • Skilled in maintaining a high level of discipline and morale throughout the Tribe.
  • Ability to exercise independent and sound judgment.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successfully pass pre-employment Drug Screen and adhere to a Random Drug Screen policy.
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License, have proof of Liability Insurance and be insurable.
  • Maintain any training and credential requirements as per policy and procedure.
  • Successfully pass Criminal Background Checks.
