Shawme Animal Hospital is a busy 2-doctor small animal veterinary practice celebrating ten years in our state of the art facility on Route 6A in Sandwich. We are seeking highly motivated, experienced team members with excellent communication skills and a passion for delivering top notch veterinary care to our valued patients and clients.

Have you ever wanted to be a part of a veterinary team but didn't know where to start? We want to hear from you! Our veterinary assistants help support our technicians, receptionists, and doctors. The role of veterinary assistant is critical to the operation of an animal hospital, and our assistants are responsible for helping with restraint, x-ray, lab work, client education & customer service, and hospital upkeep & maintenance. Previous veterinary experience is preferred, but we are willing to train applicants with a positive attitude and passion for learning and cooperation.

We are a team of fun-loving professionals who strive to provide the best of care to our patients and clients when they are in need. Our daily schedule is an exciting mix of wellness appointments, medical condition exams, surgical procedures and urgent care cases.

Responsibilities may include: patient check-in, obtaining relevant case history, implementing low-stress animal restraint & safety procedures, collecting and processing lab samples, capturing & developing digital radiographs, placing and maintaining IV catheters, performing dental cleaning procedures, surgical preparation & assistance, nursing care of hospitalized pets, client education, utilizing AVImark veterinary software, and supporting our reception team in answering phones and scheduling appointments.

Job Requirements: Friendly customer service skills and a great attitude are a must. May be required to lift up to 50 lbs. and must be able to keep up and communicate well in a busy, fast paced work environment. May be required to work Saturdays and evening hours, however we are currently only open on weekdays. EDUCATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or equivalent
Veterinary Technician Certification (CVT) desirable but not required.

PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 18 years old.
Genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to deal with them even when they are stressed, ill or in pain.
Enjoys working with people in similar circumstances.
Can stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.
Is well-spoken and approaches his/her job duties in a mature nature.
Is experienced in the teamwork approach and works well with all levels of hospital team members.
Has excellent client communication skills.
Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying animals (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 50 lbs). Walks or stands for extended periods or time; frequently works in a bent position.
Working conditions: May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.
