What are the responsibilities and job description for the FULL-TIME ANIMAL CARE & PROPERTY MAINTENANCE position at Shaw Pit Bull Refuge?
FULL-TIME ANIMAL CARE & PROPERTY MAINTENANCE
Shaw Pit Bull Refuge & Porkchop’s Phat Farm
We’re looking for one dependable, hard-working person to join our small team.
This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position, Monday–Friday. Some weekday hours may be swapped for Saturday or Sunday work if preferred and if the schedule works for the needs of the refuge.
This is a paid nonprofit position. We cannot offer a large starting wage or traditional benefits, but this is meaningful, hands-on work where what you do directly impacts the animals every day.

WHAT WE REALLY NEED
Dependability is our #1 requirement.
Our animals need care every single day, so we need someone who shows up, is on time, works hard, and follows through. We understand that genuine emergencies happen, but consistent attendance, communication, and reliability are essential to this position.
We need someone who is honest, responsible, willing to learn, able to follow instructions, receptive to feedback, and capable of working independently once trained.
We don't expect you to know everything when you start. We do expect you to pay attention, ask questions, learn our routines, and take pride in doing the job correctly.
We also need someone who can look around, recognize what needs to be done, and take initiative without constantly needing direction.
We're a small team, and having the right person in this position is important. The person we hire will play a significant role in helping us keep the refuge operating smoothly while maintaining a clean, safe, healthy environment for the animals in our care.

THE JOB
This position combines animal care, kennel/farm care, cleaning, and property maintenance.
You'll help care for our Adopt-a-Bulls, pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, geese, and other animals. Responsibilities include feeding according to individual schedules and diets, giving medications, providing fresh water, exercise and enrichment, monitoring animals, routine care, gathering eggs, and following individual care instructions.
You'll also clean kennels, yards, barns, buildings, bowls, and animal areas; sweep and mop; rake gravel; pick up waste and debris; mow and weed-eat; perform weed control; clean and check the pool; move supplies; organize equipment; make minor repairs; and help with larger and seasonal projects.
In short: if it needs to be done to care for the animals or keep the refuge clean, safe, healthy, and operating smoothly, you may be doing it.
We're looking for someone who is willing to pitch in wherever they're needed.

THIS IS A PHYSICAL, HANDS-ON JOB
We want to be upfront about what this position involves. This is not a desk job, and the work can be physically demanding. You will be active and on your feet for much of the day, working both indoors and outdoors and performing a variety of animal-care, cleaning, farm, and property-maintenance tasks.
You should be comfortable walking, standing, bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and performing repetitive physical tasks throughout the workday.
The job includes lifting and carrying bags of feed and supplies, moving buckets and equipment, cleaning kennels and yards, handling hoses and cleaning equipment, raking, shoveling, mowing, weed-eating, moving materials, and assisting with maintenance and other projects. Some items may be heavy or awkward to handle, and certain tasks may require working with another person.
You will be working outside in Mississippi heat, humidity, cold, rain, mud, and changing weather conditions. You'll encounter animal hair, odors, waste, dirt, noise, allergens, feed, cleaning products, and all of the normal messes that come with caring for a lot of animals.
You'll get dirty. Some work will be repetitive, messy, physically tiring, or simply not particularly enjoyable. That's part of the job.
You don't have to be a bodybuilder — but you do need to be physically capable of safely performing the normal duties of the position. You should be comfortable working hard, staying active throughout the day, and handling the physical demands of animal care and property maintenance.
We want applicants to understand the physical nature of the position upfront so there are no surprises. This is hands-on work, and we're looking for someone who is willing and able to pitch in wherever they're needed to keep the refuge clean, safe, healthy, and running smoothly for the animals in our care.

TRAINING & PROBATIONARY PERIODS
The first 14 days are a required training and introductory period.
Training will be Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–3:00 PM, with no time off during this initial 14-day period.
During this time, you'll learn our animals, routines, feeding schedules, medications, cleaning procedures, equipment, property responsibilities, and expectations. It also gives both you and us an opportunity to determine whether the position is a good fit.
At the end of the initial 14-day period, we will evaluate how things are going. If we determine that the position isn't the right fit, the employment relationship will end at that time.
The 30-day mark is the second probationary review period. We'll evaluate your reliability, work quality, ability to learn and follow procedures, communication, initiative, and overall fit with the position and our team.
If, at the 30-day review, we determine that the position isn't a good fit, we will part ways professionally and respectfully.
These introductory periods are important because having the right person in this position is critical. We need someone who can become a dependable part of the team and help us maintain a consistent, clean, safe, and healthy environment for the animals.
