What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Assistant position at Shasta Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine?
RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following:
DEFINITION: The Medical Assistant under the direction of the physician is responsible for assisting providers with patient care, including but not limited to, removing sutures or staples from superficial incisions or lacerations, apply and remove bandages and dressings, apply certain orthopedic appliances, remove and place casts, splints and other external devices, adjust crutches and instruct patients in their use. Interact with patients ensuring relevant information is communicated to provider in a timely manner and documented in medical record. Prepare patients for examinations or procedures. Assist patients in ambulation and transfers. Provide patient information and instructions as authorized by the physician. Ensures medical record is available at the time of patient encounter. Collect and record patient data such as height, weight, vital signs, and basic information about presenting and previous conditions. Manage patient flow within the back office, turnover and stock examination rooms. Assist providers to ensure all charges are documented, including review of charge documents to ensure presence of CPT and ICD-9 codes, patient registration form, history form, insurance card(s) copies, and other necessary documents. Batching billing documents and forward to business office.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Perform clinical duties under the supervision of Physicians.
2. Perform clerical functions as directed by Manager.
3. Maintain awareness of organization activities and policies and procedures.
4. Prepare exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments.
5. Greet patient and escorts them from the waiting room to exam rooms; prepares patient for various types of services and procedures, giving necessary instruction and keeping patient schedule flows smoothly.
6. Assists physicians in preparing for examinations and minor prodecures.
7. Schedules tests and off site procedures when necessary.
8. Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization.
9. Possesses and applies a thorough working knowledge of aseptic technique and it applications and utilize same to reduce occurrence of environmental infection by directing attention to infection control measures and environmental safety practices.
10. Disposes of contaminated items according to OSHA guidelines.
11. Obtains and handles laboratory specimens according to CLIA guidelines.
12. Performs patient education when appropriate. Replenishes supplies-stocks and cleans exam rooms.
13. Ensures that laboratory samples are picked up by the referenced laboratory daily.
14. Cleans and closes down laboratory equipment at the end of the day.
15. Monitors logs of specimens collected and sent to referenced lab-ensures reports are returned from the reference lab in a timely manner.
16. Directs lab results to physician for review and treatment plan.
17. Answer telephone, take, relay and respond to messages in a timely manner.
18. Assist with other functions as assigned.
19. Scan and link all patient documents into EHR daily.
20. Take Prompt initiative in solving problems
21. Inform Manager promptly of issues impacting departmental activities.
22. Maintains patient confidentiality; complies with HIPAA and compliance guidelines established by the practice.
23. Maintains detailed knowledge of practice management and other computer software as it relates to job functions.
24. Attends annual CPR, OSHA and CLIA train programs as necessary.
25. Attend and participate in department staff and other meetings as necessary.
26. Ensure compliance and perform duties within ethical, legal, organizational and budgetary standards/
27. Attain departmental goals and objectives.
28. Be positive and pleasant.
29. Perform other duties as directed.
PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Observes established SOSM and department policies and procedures, including confidentiality, safety, infection control and other environmental regulations.

5. Observes dress code per organizational and departmental standards.

1. Interacts effectively with all customers , both internal and external, including patients, guests, Apogee Surgery Center, hospital staff, physicians and their offices, and other SOSM departments to accomplish departmental functions.
2. Represent the organization in a professional manner at all times.
3. Assertively and professionally works to resolve difficult interactions with physicians, co-workers, visitors or personnel from other departments; uses chain of command to promptly address departmental operations concerns and unresolved issues with others.
4. Addresses cultural, religious and other special needs of patients, families and staff.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. This job has no supervisory responsibilities
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Position requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Involves standing and walking. Employee will occasionally be asked to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds. Normal visual acuity and hearing are required. Employee will work under stressful conditions, and work irregular hours. Employee will be exposed to bodi8ly fluids on a regular basis.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITION:
1. Employee will have frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

Pay: $17.86 - $22.86 per hour
