What are the responsibilities and job description for the Librarian position at Shasta College?

Under administrative leadership, it is the responsibility of the part-time college instructor to teach classes, and to participate in processes that will result in continuous improvement of instruction and programs, student success and completion, and advancement of the vision, mission, and values of Shasta College.

All Temporary Part-time Instructors are compensated a salaried flat rate ranging from $59.19 to $84.20 per clock hour taught each semester in accordance with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District and Shasta College Faculty Association/CTA/NEA.

The Part-Time Evening Librarian supports student learning and success by providing high-quality research assistance, information literacy instruction, and access to library resources during evening hours. Working within an equity-minded, student-focused environment, the Evening Librarian ensures that all patrons-regardless of background, academic preparation, or experience-receive welcoming, responsive, and inclusive library support.

  • Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities designated below are primary to the role.

The Evening Librarian will:
  • Provide in-person and online reference services, including help with research strategies, database searching, citations, and evaluation of information sources.
  • Offer one-on-one assistance to students, faculty, and staff using library technology, databases, course reserves, and online collections
  • Support information literacy instruction by conducting brief workshops, classroom orientations, or drop-in support sessions as needed.
  • Assist, when needed, with circulation tasks, such as circulation of materials, resolving student account issues, and reporting or troubleshooting library systems.
  • Assist with interlibrary loan requests.
  • Maintain a safe and quiet learning environment during evening hours, including opening or closing duties.
  • Collaborate with library staff to update research guides, tutorials, and student support materials.
  • Contribute to collection development activities, including selection and deselection and recommending online and print sources for purchase by the library.
  • Uphold library policies and contribute to an inclusive space that supports diverse learners.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the instruction librarian to provide face-to-face and online instruction as needed
  • Manage and create instructional materials utilizing technology such as LibGuides, Canvas, Padlet, and similar tools
  • Participate in the evaluation process as described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
  • Continue to develop professional skills and remain current in subject matter knowledge.
  • Keep and submit official records required by District policy and administrative procedures.
  • Abide by District policies concerning District property and safety.
  • Report absences due to illness or for personal necessity to the supervising administrator.
  • Recommend purchases of instructional supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Fulfill all obligations as established in the current collective bargaining agreement.

Other Activities:
Part-time faculty are encouraged to engage in the following activities, but these are not required. Some of these activities may be eligible for flex pay or stipends.
  • Schedule and maintain office hour days and times and ensure that they are clearly communicated to announce to students in all classes and to division staff, and maintain office hours.
  • Participate in the process of participatory governance through District participatory, ad hoc, or advisory committees.
  • Participate in the curriculum review process within established cycles; develop new courses in response to student or community needs.
  • Participate in program review and annual planning within established cycles.
  • Attend and participate in department and division meetings.
  • Assess learning outcomes and participate in learning outcomes processes.
  • Participate in required professional development activities that result in improved pedagogy leading to student success and completion.

Experience/Education

Education Required:
  • Master's in library science, library and information science
    OR the equivalent.

Experience Required:
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, as well as staff members and students with physical and/or learning disabilities.

Experience Preferred:
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with e-learning, instructional technology, and website content maintenance
  • Ability to develop and teach information literacy classes and workshops
  • Experience with outreach and marketing library services
  • Demonstrated proficiency using online databases and electronic resources
  • Experience utilizing library service platforms

The primary minimum qualification for academic positions is an advanced degree in the relevant subject matter for the position.
