Job Summary
The Blood Bank Supervisor / Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the blood bank. This includes ensuring the safe and efficient testing, processing, storage, and distribution of blood products. The position also involves supervising laboratory staff, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines, and collaborating with medical professionals to ensure the availability of blood products for patient care.
Supervises the Following Positions
Positions: Medical Technologist/Technicians and lab assistants (phlebotomists)
Physical Requirements

Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions
- Supervise and coordinate the activities of medical technologists, technicians, and laboratory assistants in the blood bank.
- Oversee the testing of blood for ABO blood group, Rh factor, antibodies and infectious diseases.
- Ensure blood products are properly labeled, stored, and maintained in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Manage blood inventory levels and ensure proper rotation of blood products.
- Collaborate with physicians and medical staff to ensure timely and accurate blood product availability.
- Implement and monitor quality control programs to ensure compliance with FDA, CAP, and other regulatory standards.
- Maintain accurate documentation of all blood product testing, processing, and distribution.
- Ensure all staff follow infection control and safety protocols in blood collection, handling, and storage.
- Assist with the development and implementation of training programs for laboratory staff.
- Perform periodic audits and prepare for regulatory inspections.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills to manage and mentor laboratory staff.
- In-depth knowledge of blood bank operations, transfusion medicine, and laboratory testing procedures.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in ensuring accurate blood product testing and record-keeping.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond to urgent medical situations.
- Strong communication skills to interact with medical staff, patients, and laboratory personnel.
- Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications
Education
- Required
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related field.
Experience:
- Required
- Three years of experience in a blood bank or clinical laboratory setting
- One or more years of leadership experience
- Knowledge of FDA, AABB, and CLIA regulations and standards
Certification/Licensure:
- Required
- Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) through ASCP or an equivalent accrediting body
- Preferred
- Certification in Blood Banking (BB or SBB)
