Bilingual Workers' Compensation Legal Assistant (English/Spanish)
Shankle Law Firm | Charlotte, NC | Full-Time

About us
Shankle Law Firm is a Charlotte law firm focused on workers' compensation and personal injury. Our clients are hurt workers and their families, and many of them are going through one of the hardest stretches of their lives. We work hard for them, and we look after our own team too.

About the role
We're looking for a bilingual legal assistant (English and Spanish) to join our Workers' Compensation team. You'll work side by side with our paralegals to keep cases organized and moving, from the first paperwork to the day the client picks up their settlement check. A big part of the job is being a friendly, reliable voice for our Spanish-speaking clients. If you're organized, detail-oriented, and like helping people through a tough time, you'll fit in well here.

What you'll do

Getting new cases started

  • Send new client paperwork and welcome cards, and make sure we get everything back
  • Set up new matters and contacts in our case management system
  • Get clients' portal info and upload the Form 18 and letter of representation to the NCIC portal

Keeping cases moving

  • Handle Form 25T and 25P, and follow up on records requests until they come in
  • File mediator designations (MSC4) and extension requests when needed
  • Help with the interrogatory process for English and Spanish-speaking clients
  • Complete mediation prep checklists 8 weeks out
  • Share our rules and updates with nurse case managers
  • Review, scan, and save mail, medical records, bills, nurse reports, and emails to the electronic file
  • Keep the e-file clean and organized: naming, sorting, and saving documents from portals, email, fax, and our phone system

Taking care of clients

  • Call clients when their mediation or hearing is scheduled, and send them the details in writing
  • Check in on whether clients are getting medical bills
  • Explain forms like the Form 90 and help clients get them signed and returned
  • Let clients know when their benefits are changing after a settlement is approved
  • Send surgery cards and make birthday calls, because the little things matter
  • Greet walk-ins and help clients picking up settlement checks

Wrapping up cases

  • Make sure settlement agreements (clincher and Form 26A) are signed, sent to defense counsel, and approved
  • Follow up until the settlement check arrives
  • Send unpaid bill letters and complete any settlement paperwork
  • Ask happy clients for a Google review

What we're looking for

  • Fluent in English and Spanish, both spoken and written (required)
  • Office, customer service, or legal experience; law firm or workers' comp experience is a plus, but we'll train the right person
  • Strong organization skills and good attention to detail
  • Patient and kind with clients who may be stressed or in pain
  • Comfortable with computers, Microsoft 365, and learning new software

Schedule
Monday through Thursday, 8:30am to 5:30pm, and Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm. In office in Charlotte.

Benefits
We take care of our people. Full-time employees get:

Health and well-being

  • Medical insurance
  • Dental and vision insurance
  • Life insurance

Time off

  • PTO plus paid holidays
  • Sick days
  • Unused PTO and sick pay are paid out at the end of your anniversary year
  • Time off to vote when you can't get to the polls before or after work

Finances

  • SIMPLE IRA with a firm match
  • Referral bonus program

Culture

  • We celebrate your birthday and work anniversary
  • Staff outings and an annual Christmas dinner
