About The Job
The Chamudim Unit Head is a member of the Administrative Team during the Summer. Unit Heads are responsible for managing the well-being of their assigned unit. A unit contains 3-5 bunks (groups) of children: Chamudim (Kindergarten), Noar (1st-2nd grade), Kochavim (3rd-4th grade), and Giborim (5th-6th grade). It is expected that all Unit Heads will understand and promote the Shalom Austin and JCamps missions and objectives while providing the best camp experience for campers and their families. The Chamudim Unit Head must be able to address unique socioemotional needs for children who are transitioning from preschool to kindergarten. They are also expected to coach new and experienced staff on setting safe boundaries for younger children while simultaneously building their independence. Lasltly, the Chamudim Unit Head must be able to effectively communicate with new parents in the program who may be sending their children to day camp for the first time.

You’ll wow us by masterfully performing the following key duties and responsibilities:
- Be active and engaged with the campers and staff of their assigned unit(s)
- Collaborate on special event and theme days
- Manage and conducts evaluations of staff in their unit.
- Complete administrative tasks such as written accident and incident reports.
- Communicate with parents, including phone calls and follow-up regarding incident and accident reports
- Eligible candidates must be at least 18 years old. Eligible candidates also must have graduated from High School or obtained a GED by the start of camp. Experience with Elementary Aged children (grades K-6) is required.
- Specific experience with preschool and kindergarten age children is preferred. Candidates should also have a strong understanding of developmentally appropriate behavior for young children and a thorough understanding of behavioral guidance strategies that can address their socioemotional needs.
- JCamps staff are required to pass all criminal history background checks, including an FBI fingerprint check.
- They must also obtain a current CPR and First-Aid certification. A degree in childhood education/human development/psychology/therapeutic recreation or a related field is preferred
- Unit Heads are based out of the Youth and Teen Office but will be expected to execute daily responsibilities throughout Shalom Austin’s campus. Unit Heads set their own schedule for the day, responding to the needs of the campers and staff in the unit(s) they oversee. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds. Unit Heads must have the ability to be outside and handle Austin summer heat.
- This position is a seasonal full-time position. The expected hours are from 8AM-4PM Monday through Friday, with opportunities to work until 5:30. Seasonal work begins June 1 and goes through August 1 with opportunities to work through August 15. Hours are subject to change based on the camp’s needs.
