What are the responsibilities and job description for the Camp Counselor position at Shaffer's High Sierra Camp?
Primary Role:
- To care for campers and lead/ assist in activities that they partake in throughout the day
General Responsibilities:
- To supervise campers, including enforcing safety regulations
- To identify and meet camper needs
- To carry out camp programs and activities
Must be able to show:
- Maturity and good judgement in order to be responsible for children and put the child’s needs above your own
- Ability to be fun, goofy, have a good sense of humor, and be crazy when times require
- Ability to work hard and maintain a positive attitude
- The desire to make a difference in a child’s life
Typical Work Day: 7am- 10pm
Average Off-Time: 1 day off per week, and 1.5-2 hours off per day (not including off time at night)
Schedule shifts every single day to give campers & staff opportunities to partake in new activities, and is posted late the night before or the morning of.
Physically and mentally challenging work: you’ll be on your feet most of the day and will be required to attend to homesick campers, behaviorally challenged campers, and campers who bring with them a host of mental health concerns
- Must be willing and able to obtain certifications (from an ACA-approved certification sponsor) that apply to the activity area to which you are assigned:
- Aquatics staff must have a Lifeguard certification
- Outdoor Living Skills must have a Wilderness First Aid certification, etc.
Must be willing and able to live and work in a communal environment with rustic and minimal facilities.
Age Requirement: Must be 19 years or older, or 18 years with a year of college. We do not hire recent high school graduates as they are too close in age to our oldest campers.
