We provide long term care to special needs cats in a cage free Sanctuary environment while also providing compassionate and humane resources to effect positive change in community cat populations through Trap, Neuter and Return program and spay/neuter programs.
Position Overview:
The Cat Care Technician is responsible for providing attentive, compassionate, and fear-free daily care to the cats residing at the sanctuary. This role includes medicating, assessing and caring of the cats as well as maintaining a clean, safe, and enriching environment through routine cleaning, sanitation, and general upkeep of the premises. This position requires a moderate level of physical labor and requires consistent hands-on interaction with cats of varying temperaments.
Monitors the general health of cats and ensures proper medical care is given as prescribed.
Monitors all cats for signs/symptoms of illness and communicates any changes immediately to the manager.
Monitors quality of life for cats considered hospice-care.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Clean all areas of sanctuary.
- Feed cats based on individual requirements.
- Medicate via all routes (PO, Ears, Eyes, SQ).
- Glucose checks and giving insulin.
- Basic cat care (nail trims, flea meds, etc.).
- Physically assess cats.
- Restrain properly in necessary situations (fear free).
- Draw blood for lab work (with proper handling of samples & collection tubes).
- Perform bladder & colon expressions, as well as place urinary catheter for purpose of emptying bladder.
- Update medical records and use of Shelterluv program.
- Completing quality of life assessments on hospice care cats.
Working Environment:
Possible exposure to infectious organisms, animal waste, allergens, chemical materials requiring OSHA Safety Data Sheets and handling of semi tame or feral cats.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs. Work is performed both in and outdoors, which requires lifting, bending, stooping, pushing and other moderately strenuous activities. Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.
Job Requirements:
· At least one year of recent experience in a veterinary/shelter/kennel setting
· Ability to perform routine animal care tasks and other duties as assigned
· Good Communication Skills
· Team Player
· High school diploma or GED
· Must be willing and able to work with cats and have a basic understanding of the needs and behavior of fractious and companion cats. Must be able to handle individual animals in caring, safe, and humane manner
· Valid Driver’s License
