JOB LOCATION : Main Campus

DEPARTMENT: PHLEBOTOMY

SCHEDULE: Full Time, 8 HR Day Shift, 10:00am-6:30pm; rotating on-call

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Phlebotomy Coordinator is responsible for coordinating daily phlebotomy operations, optimizing workflow, and ensuring timely, and high-quality specimen collection across all service areas. This role oversees staff assignments, monitors productivity and turnaround times, and acts as a primary resource for resolving collection issues and service concerns. In addition, this role will function as a preceptor by onboarding and training new hires, validating staff competencies, and providing ongoing education to ensure adherence to best practices, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. The role promotes a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement by coaching staff, addressing performance gaps, and supporting quality initiatives to reduce errors and enhance patient care. This position is required to maintain active participation in daily phlebotomy operations and function as a productive member of the laboratory team. The Coordinator will routinely perform specimen collection and assist with workload demands to support staffing needs, ensure workflow continuity, and model expected performance standards. This role is expected to lead by example through consistent productivity, professionalism, and engagement in day-to-day operations. The Coordinator collaborates closely with laboratory leadership to maintain efficient operations and deliver exceptional service.

EDUCATION

  • Meets requirements for position as defined by CLIA 88 standards and the Georgia Laboratory Licensure law (O.C.G. A. 31-20). High school graduate or GED preferred.
  • Associate’s Degree in either Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Assisting, or related science field required. Relevant experience of at least three (3) years may be considered in lieu of education requirement at the discretion of the department leader.
  • Current in CPR.
  • Certification by one of the following national accrediting agencies in phlebotomy: ASCP, AMT, ASPT, NPA, MedCA, NCCT, AAH, or ACA.

Experience

  • Prior management/supervisory experience or manager training strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Competence in phlebotomy, registration, general office skills, and medical terminology and Microsoft office products.
  • The ability to perform under pressure, good judgement, and excellent critical reasoning skills are essential.
  • Demonstrate accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills in dealing with the public, physicians and other hospital staff required.
  • Temperament suited to short cycle repetitive work.
  • Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide phlebotomy for laboratory testing appropriate to the age of the patient’s seen in their assigned area.
  • Must be able to assess and interpret data or signs about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide the care needed by our patient groups.

WORKING CONDITIONS - ADA INFORMATION

The majority of work will be completed in modern hospital laboratories with access to patient areas and physician offices. Work activities will include: light lifting (up to twenty-five (25) lbs), frequent walking, sitting, standing, stooping, bending, twisting, and pushing objects. Must be able to operate office equipment, computer terminals and keyboards, computerized lab equipment and an automobile. Must be able to perform CPR. Must possess a valid and current Georgia driver’s license. Normal color vision is necessary. Demonstrates manual dexterity, specifically hand-eye coordination.
