We’re seeking an experienced and motivated Owner’s Lead Protection Engineer to work directly with one of our utility clients, providing expert guidance and technical oversight across transmission, substation, distribution, and renewable energy projects.
In this role, you’ll serve as an extension of the client’s engineering team, taking the lead on protection and control efforts that ensure projects are designed, reviewed, and executed to the highest technical and safety standards. You’ll play a key role in coordinating project deliverables, reviewing designs, and guiding junior engineers—acting as both a technical authority and trusted partner.

Compensation: $90,000 to $140,000 per year depending on your skills and experience
This position offers the flexibility of a remote or hybrid schedule while still engaging directly with the client’s engineering and project management teams on critical infrastructure initiatives.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and perform engineering design for high- and medium-voltage protection and control systems.
- Review and approve design deliverables prepared by others on behalf of the client.
- Interpret and apply client engineering standards and guidelines to new and existing projects.
- Oversee project planning, coordination, and design reviews across multiple concurrent projects.
- Collaborate closely with the client’s engineering, operations, and project management teams to guide technical decisions and ensure alignment on project goals.
- Manage project schedules, deliverables, and documentation to support on-time, high-quality completion.
- Provide construction and commissioning support, including troubleshooting and field coordination when needed.
- Ensure compliance with client procedures, document control practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Support and mentor other engineers on best practices in protection design and project execution.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline required.
- 5 years of experience in utility, consulting, or related engineering environments.
- In-depth understanding of protection and control design principles and relay-based protection systems.
- Experience with microprocessor-based relay configuration software is required.
- Familiarity with communication protocols, pilot protection schemes, and SCADA systems preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Smartsheets, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Strong familiarity with AutoCAD and cross-disciplinary projects preferred.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and project coordination skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects independently and effectively.
- Completion of the Professional Engineering (PE) exam preferred; interest in obtaining PE licensure encouraged.
