SGA provides a wide range of social services in some of Chicagoland's most challenged and consistently underserved communities, and creates long-term and community-wide change.


Description: The Mental Health Equity Initiative seeks to strengthen the mental health continuum of care by addressing gaps in services, building accessible care options in communities, and contributing to public health approaches to the intersection of violence, substance use, and mental health. This work supports city-wide violence prevention efforts to reduce exposure to violence and its mental health consequences, improve equitable access to culturally responsive mental health care that decreases disparities in violence risk across populations, and tackle structural drivers of violence, including inequality, poverty, and marginalization.


Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Provides short term individual and group counseling services to elementary, middle and high school students in designated Chicago Public Schools. 
  • Utilizes the Medicaid IM CANS as a standardized tool to evaluate the mental health, risk behaviors, trauma exposure, and functional needs of clients requiring mental health services for integrated assessment and treatment planning.
  • Establishes a mental health clinic within school settings.
  • Coordinates with school staff and administration, parents, and other partners in providing clinical services and care to clients. 
  • Provides crisis intervention and case management services, as needed. 
  • Manages agency expectations for all documentation, including but not limited to case notes and client assessments, promptly. 
  • Develops professional partnerships with CPS school administration and behavioral health teams, and represents the agency with professionalism and integrity. 
  • Maintains awareness of climate, cultural and clinical issues at designated schools and provides ongoing support as needed. 
  • Provides individual and group therapy, case management, advocacy and referral/linkage to all clients as well as other SEL related services to elementary and high school aged students at partner school sites. 
  • Responsible for assessment, treatment planning, advocacy, crisis intervention, and referral/linkage services. 
  • Provides individual and group counseling services using evidenced based curricula as applicable.
  • Provides time limited individual and group counseling with emphasis on skill building and problem resolution. 
  • Provides supportive school culture through classroom observations, workshops, and trainings for teachers/administration, parents and community, as applicable.
  • Coordinates clinical and case management services with school staff, teachers and parents. 
  • Directs day to day implementation of the program at school site.
  • Develops working relationships with school-based staff, as well as funder representative. 
  • Monitors school-level implementation and achievement of program deliverables and all associated reporting.
  • Attends required training as directed.
  • Develops and prepares reports, presentations and marketing materials for program.
  • Manages all agency expectations for case recording, data tracking and other documentation on a timely basis.
  • Commitment to the mission, goals and philosophy of the Agency. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.



Requirements

Attributes/Skills Required/Sought:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish, preferred.
  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity, ability to effectively communicate with families, professionals, and community groups of diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability in providing comprehensive counseling services, including crisis intervention
  • Clinical approach rooted in trauma-informed, child development, relationship-based lens
  • Full attendance and participation in supervision and all scheduled trainings
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to develop professional partnerships.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple responsibilities, maintain accurate records and prepare reports in a timely fashion.
  • Display sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural differences present in SGA’s service population.
  • Knowledge of public/community resources supporting needs of clients and their families. 
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to integrating an anti-oppressive and social justice-oriented lens to therapeutic approach, including client assessments and diagnosis. 
  • Commitment to the highest level of ethics, morals, standards, respect for others, empathy, and privacy of client information 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Strong judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and support others in navigating systemic issues that impact clients and communities. 
  • Experience and demonstrated understanding of urban, under-resourced educational environments and the systemic forces that impact them. 

Experience/Education Required/Sought:

  • EDUCATION: Master’s Degree from an accredited school in social work, psychology, public health or related field. Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) Required.  
  • Minimum of three (3) years of post-Master’s degree experience with program implementation and supervision.
  • Belief that all children have the potential to succeed in school.
  • Display of strong knowledge base in case conceptualization, diagnosis and treatment.
  • Prior experience working with children and families in a school and community setting.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with Chicago Public Schools or other school systems preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license, auto insurance
  • Must be able to transport oneself to and from work sites.
