Position Title: Special Education Teacher


Accountability Objectives

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing instruction, support, and supervision for students with disabilities, ensuring all educational requirements are met both within and beyond the life skills classroom.

Length of Employment: Per SEA Negotiated Agreement

Position Relationships

Reports to: Principal
Coordinates with: Superintendent, Principal, Assistant Principal, Activities Director, Technology Coordinator, Business Manager, Professional Staff, Classified Staff, and Students


Position Qualifications

Required Certification, Experience, and Training:
The special education teacher must meet all certification requirements and professional standards established by the State of Nebraska and Seward Public Schools, including:

  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum) from an accredited college or university

  • Valid Nebraska Teaching Certificate (applicable endorsements preferred)

  • Completed credential file including all undergraduate and graduate coursework

  • Evidence of successful teaching performance and/or student teaching experience

  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to adhere to the ethical and professional standards set by the Nebraska State Board of Education


Position Responsibilities

Individualized Instruction

  • Develop and deliver individualized lessons focused on functional academics, daily living skills, and vocational readiness

  • Provide transition-focused instruction aligned with IEP goals and postsecondary outcomes

Vocational & Community-Based Instruction

  • Coordinate and supervise community-based vocational training and job-site experiences

  • Plan and implement community-based activities supporting daily living and community engagement skills (e.g., money management, personal care, household skills, cooking, safety, transportation)

  • Build and maintain positive partnerships with community agencies, employers, and job coaches

IEP Case Management

  • Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of IEPs

  • Collect and analyze student data to guide instruction and measure progress

  • Collaborate with related service providers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and families

  • Coordinate with adult service agencies (e.g., Vocational Rehabilitation, developmental disability services) to support transition planning

Classroom Management

  • Establish and maintain a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment that promotes student independence

  • Plan daily schedules and routines that support learning both on campus and in community settings

  • Manage adaptive materials, equipment, and instructional resources

  • Ensure compliance with district policies and state regulations

  • Provide supervision, guidance, and support to paraprofessionals and job coaches

General Responsibilities

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance

  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills

  • Provide instruction to all students regardless of ability level

  • Serve as a positive role model for students

  • Build strong relationships with students, staff, families, and community stakeholders

  • Teach the Seward Public Schools curriculum and life skills

  • Support students’ cognitive development, motivation, and citizenship

  • Maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning

  • Perform other duties as assigned
