Position Overview

Primary Function:

The University of the South seeks an experienced and collaborative Title IX Coordinator | Clery Compliance Manager to provide institutional leadership in advancing a campus culture grounded in responsiveness, equity, and safety. This position is a key compliance and community-impact role within a residential liberal-arts university known for its close-knit environment and distinctive rural setting atop the Cumberland Plateau.

The Title IX Coordinator provides primary leadership for the University’s response to sex discrimination, sexual harassment, and gender-based misconduct. The Clery Compliance Manager coordinates aspects of Clery Act reporting, policy development, and campus safety-related documentation in close partnership with the Sewanee Police Department.

This dual-portfolio role requires significant higher-education Title IX experience, strong regulatory fluency, and the ability to navigate sensitive matters with clarity, neutrality, and compassion.

The position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Human Resources and has a dotted-line relationship to the Dean of Students.

Position Description

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Title IX Regulatory Leadership — Interpret and apply federal and state Title IX regulations, VAWA requirements, and related guidance; ensure institutional policies reflect current legal standards.

  • Clery Act Compliance — Support Clery Act reporting, crime classifications, geography determinations, and annual safety publications.
  • Trauma-Informed Case Management — Oversee intake, supportive measures, investigations, and resolution processes.
  • Training & Prevention — Lead campus-wide Title IX education; develop and administer training for students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Cross-Campus Collaboration — Partner with Student Life, HR, Campus Police, Academic Affairs, General Counsel, and regional advocacy centers.
  • Data Stewardship & Reporting — Serve as Campus Safety Survey contributor; co-prepare and distribute the Annual Security Report.
  • Campus Climate Leadership — Advance a campus climate grounded in safety, respect, transparency, and continuous improvement.

Budgetary Responsibilities:

Analyzes budgetary data and develops budget proposals.

Personal Interaction/Communications:
Student Contact: Regular interaction with students
Internal: Regular interaction with Student Life personnel, faculty, staff, and others.
External: Occasionally, as necessary

Attributes of a Successful Candidate

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of progressively responsible Title IX administration experience in higher education (required).

  • Demonstrated experience designing or overseeing compliance programs.
  • Extensive knowledge of Title IX, VAWA, and Clery Act requirements.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree or JD preferred.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficiency with case-management systems (e.g., Maxient).
  • Knowledge of athletics-related regulatory frameworks.
  • Professional certification in Title IX or Clery compliance preferred.
