Position Summary: We are seeking a talented Intelligence Engineer to join our team at the SETI Institute. This role focuses on building cutting-edge AI systems for radio astronomy and Technosignature research. You will play a key part in transforming raw research data into actionable datasets and developing small, purpose-built open-source models to advance our scientific capabilities. In this role, you will also have access to the world’s most powerful astronomical facilities (such as ATA, VLA, MeerKAT etc) and a global network of collaborators conducting the most sensitive, intensive and comprehensive search for evidence of advanced life in the universe.
This is a remote position, and we welcome applications from US and international candidates.
Salary range for US-based applicants: $55,000 to $75,000 USD
Responsibilities
● Build multi-modal datasets from raw research data
● Evaluate performance of Large Language Models via benchmarks
● Develop harnesses for building datasets and training models
● Conduct fine-tuning campaigns on foundational models
● Document results of completed work product
Required Qualifications
● Proficiency in Python
● Excellent written and verbal communication in English
● Experience with commercial Large Language Models (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok)
● Familiarity with machine learning, Large Language Models, and Convolutional Neural Networks fundamentals
● Excellent ability to study and understand academic research
● Expertise in TensorFlow, PyTorch, JAX, or Keras
● Ability to turn raw multi-modal data into balanced datasets
Preferred Qualifications
● Proficiency in academic writing
● Exposure to open-source Large Language Models (GLM, Z.AI, Qwen, etc.)
● Familiarity with fine-tuning techniques such as LoRA
● Know-how on running models locally (e.g., VLM, Llama.cpp) on a cluster of GPUs
● Practice with TensorRT (converting models and debugging)
● Basic understanding of astrophysics
● Experience with academic writing of papers and research notes
● Proficiency in C and/or CUDA
Physical Requirements:
- Work in cleanrooms over extended periods wearing cleanroom apparel, face-mask, protective glasses and gloves.
- Stand, walk, reach or work above shoulders.
- Execute high-precision manual tasks (excellent hand coordination and sharp vision required).
- Perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Sort, file paperwork, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh up to 25 lbs.
