Job Description

Located in midcoast Maine, AOS 93 (Central Lincoln County School System) offers a quality education to its students in four K-8 elementary schools from the towns of Bristol, Jefferson, Nobleboro and South Bristol.

The district has an opening for a Director of Special Services starting July 1, 2025 and is seeking an experienced special educator to oversee the overall administration of special education programs and related services. Additional responsibilities include 504 District Coordinator, Title IX Coordinator and the McKinney-Vento Homeless Liaison.

Qualifications Desired

Candidates should have three years Special Education Teaching and possess a Master's Degree in Special Education or Educational Leadership and be certified as a Special Education Administrator (030 Certificate). Experience in Administration is preferred.

Performance Responsibilities

  • To be responsible for all state and federal forms, reports, mandates, and compliance related to Special Education, 504, ELL, Foster Children, and students that are Homeless.
  • To work closely with building principals and the Superintendent at least on a weekly basis, keeping them informed at all times as to recommendations and types of referral services being made to children in their school.
  • To oversee the recordkeeping of all students serviced by special education and to follow state statute regarding release of said information.
  • To schedule and chair (as necessary) all IEP Team Meetings in AOS 93 and have the authority to commit human and fiscal resources.
  • To provide for an orderly transition for students serviced by Special Education and Gifted and Talented Education from one grade to the next. Communicate with regular education teachers, parents, and support personnel about student needs, including transportation services for students who require this service as noted in their IEP.
  • To work with AOS 93 staff and administration to direct billing for services for tutorial, physical therapy, and state agency clients.
  • To assist building principals with staff evaluation, curriculum, program development, and in-service programs.
  • To be a member of AOS 93 committees.
  • To write and monitor state and federal grants applicable to Special Education.
  • To be responsible for enforcing FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) standards in AOS 93.
  • To be AOS 93’s Section 504 coordinator. (Federal Civil Rights for the Handicapped).
  • To coordinate AOS 93’s Child Find Activities.
  • To confer with medical professionals for diagnostic analyses of all aspects of a child's handicapping condition.
  • To accept all referrals from Principals in Grades K-12 and make provisions to see that adequate diagnosis is completed to determine need.
  • To confer with administration, teachers, and parents relating diagnostic results and making recommendations and suggestions to serve the best interest of the child involved in conjunction with the IEP Team.
  • To act as a liaison person between all outside state and private agencies regarding referrals.
  • To assume other duties and responsibilities at the discretion of the Superintendent of Schools.
