Title: School Nutrition Director

Qualifications

• Meets or exceeds USDA Professional Standards requirements for a School Nutrition Program Director.
• Holds a Maine Department of Education Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) or has the ability to obtain one.
• Holds a valid ServSafe Food Manager Certification or equivalent food safety credential, or is able to obtain certification upon hire.

Position Summary

The School Nutrition Director provides leadership in developing, maintaining, and innovating the District's food service program, with an emphasis on providing students with high-quality, balanced meals. The Director inspires the development of lifelong healthy nutrition habits across all District schools while ensuring strict compliance with all applicable federal and state guidelines and regulations.

Performance Responsibilities

• Prepares and administers the annual budget for the District's Food Service Program to ensure fiscal responsibility and sustainability.
• Plans menus that meet all state and federal requirements, including grade-level-appropriate menus and menus that accommodate special dietary needs.
• Purchases and maintains an active and accurate inventory of all food, supplies, and kitchen equipment.
• Participates in regional cooperative purchasing groups to maximize cost savings through combined district buying power.
• Cultivates and maintains professional working relationships with distributors, local farms, brokers, and other vendors.
• Plans, analyzes, and supervises the preparation and service of compliant meals at all District schools.
• Informs the public, parents, students, and staff of planned menus and program updates.
• Inspects school kitchens, storage facilities, and daily operations to ensure rigorous health and safety standards are maintained.
• Administers personnel policies fairly, conducts regular staff meetings, and formally evaluates food service staff.
• Coordinates and tracks mandatory annual continuing education and professional development training hours for all food service staff to maintain full compliance with USDA Professional Standards.
• Interviews and recommends the employment of food service candidates in accordance with District hiring protocols.
• Reviews, audits, and verifies all invoices, bills, and purchase orders for accuracy before submitting them to the Business Office for timely payment processing.
• Supervises and utilizes modern department technology, including front-of-house Point of Sale (POS) software, back-of-house inventory control systems, and financial tracking systems.
• Manages federal meal programs and ensures District compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations.
• Manages the District's catering and à la carte programs.
• Provides strategic leadership and daily management to the food service team, fostering a collaborative, customer-service-driven environment focused on safety, efficiency, and student satisfaction.
• Performs other professional duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

Terms of Employment: Salary, work year and working conditions to be established by the RSU 57 School Board.

Salary Range: $65,000 – $85,000 annually

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the School Board's policy on evaluation.
