Anticipated Elementary General Music Teacher

The Music Teacher will design and implement a sequential music program grounded in the Maine Learning Results for Visual and Performing Arts. This role focuses on the "bridge" years of musical development, moving students from foundational play to technical proficiency, part-work, and critical response.

Maine-Specific Instructional Requirements

• Standards Alignment: Develop a curriculum that meets the Maine Learning Results (MLR) across the four primary strands: Creating, Performing, Responding, and Connecting.
• Guiding Principles: Ensure music instruction supports the Maine Guiding Principles, helping students become Clear and Effective Communicators, Self-Directed Lifelong Learners, and Informed Thinkers through artistic expression.
• Assessment: Utilize the Maine DOE-recommended assessment frameworks to track student growth in rhythmic and melodic literacy, vocal health, and instrumental skills.
  
  

Supporting the Developmental Needs of All Learners

• Differentiated Instruction: Modify and adapt lessons to meet the diverse needs of all learners, including students with IEPs, 504 plans, and Multilingual Learners (MLs).
• Upper Elementary Milestone Support: * Cognitive: Support the 3rd–5th grade shift toward abstract thinking by introducing formal notation and complex structures (e.g., ABA form, rounds, and partner songs).
• Physical: Account for varying levels of fine motor development when introducing instruments like recorders, ukuleles, or world percussion.
• Social-Emotional: Create a "brave space" for performance and improvisation, acknowledging the increased self-consciousness often found in 4th and 5th graders.
• Inclusive Repertoire: Select diverse repertoire that reflects both the local Maine heritage (including Wabanaki history and folk traditions) and a global musical perspective.
  

Key Responsibilities

• Sequential Pedagogy: Deliver a curriculum based on established methods (e.g., Orff, Kodály, or MLT) that builds year-over-year.
• Technology Integration: Use tools like Chrome Music Lab, Flat.io, or GarageBand to support the Maine MLR "Media Arts" components.
• Collaboration: Partner with the Special Education and EL departments to ensure the music room is a universally designed learning environment (UDL).
  
  

Qualifications

• Certification: Maine State Teacher Certification with Endorsement 620 (Music K-12).
• Expertise: Deep understanding of the 8–11-year-old developmental window and a passion for "tween" education.
• Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with Maine families and community stakeholders regarding the value of arts education.
