Program Director – Job Description
Servants for Sight (Eye Care for those in Need)
Oct 12, 2026 · @Amy
About Servants for Sight
Servants for Sight (SFS) is a Christian nonprofit based in Greenville, South Carolina, that provides free and low-cost eye care to people in under-resourced communities. Our mission is to provide hope and healing to our communities through preventative and restorative eye care.
SFS was founded in 2009 by volunteer eye care doctors who wanted to serve neighbors who could not afford the care they needed. Today, thanks to a recent grant, SFS is opening a satellite program in Orangeburg County and the surrounding counties. Its new Eye Care Mobile Unit and Optics Lab will bring that same care directly to the people who need it most.
About the role
Servants for Sight is hiring a full-time Program Director to lead the expansion of its free and low-cost eye care program into a new service area. You will launch and run SFS's new Eye Care Mobile Unit, bringing vision screenings and eye exams directly to the communities that need them most.
This is a hands-on leadership role and a rare chance to shape a new program from day one. You will build the partnerships, provider network and volunteer base that make each screening event possible, and you will be the face of SFS on-site for partners, volunteers and patients. You will also support fundraising efforts to sustain the program for the long term.
You will work closely with SFS's Clinical Director as an equal partner. The Clinical Director brings eye care expertise and is responsible for all clinical and optical work, including managing volunteer doctors, screening patients, assisting doctors as an ophthalmic technician and making glasses. You will lead the program, partnership and operational side, so that together you deliver every screening event.
We believe everyone deserves eye care, that every person has a story that has led them to where they are, and that all are loved by Christ. Religious participation is never required for patients to receive care.
Key responsibilities
Partnerships and community outreach
- Recruit, train and manage partner agencies that host the Eye Care Mobile Unit on-site for free vision screening events.
- Recruit and manage volunteer eye care providers and practices to see patients and perform exams on the mobile unit with help from the Clinical Director.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for partner agencies, providers and volunteers.
Mobile unit operations
- Drive and maintain the Eye Care Mobile Unit and Optics Lab with the assistance of the Clinical Director.
- Recruit, schedule and manage volunteers to staff the mobile unit at screening events, including training them on event setup, patient flow and their on-site roles.
- Work on-site at every free vision screening event, overseeing setup, patient flow and breakdown.
- Pray regularly over the Eye Care Mobile Unit and for each screening event, as well as for partner agencies, patients and volunteer doctors.
Patient services and administration
- Review patient applications and verify eligibility.
- Lead program orientations for all screened patients referred for further eye care. Orientation covers eye health and prevention, confirms patients can make their appointments without scheduling or transportation barriers, and collects the $25 program fee where applicable.
- During orientation, share SFS's story as a Christian organization, offer prayer and encouragement to patients who welcome it, and provide Bibles to patients.
- Enter and maintain patient and program data, and handle general administrative tasks.
- Protect patient privacy by following HIPAA requirements for collecting, storing and sharing patient health information, and ensure staff and volunteers handle patient data securely.
Fundraising and sustainability (as needed)
- The program's launch is fully funded through a grant. In future years, help plan fundraising events such as an annual dinner and pursue new grant opportunities.
- Share program stories, outcomes and data to support grant applications, donor outreach and events.
Qualifications
Required
- Strong organizational skills and comfort with data entry and record-keeping.
- Valid driver's license with a safe driving record, and a commercial driver's license (CDL) or willingness to obtain one. SFS will fund CDL training for candidates who do not already have it.
- Experience in program management, community outreach or nonprofit operations.
- Experience with fundraising, grant support or donor relations.
- Proven ability to recruit, train and coordinate partners and volunteers.
- Warm, clear communicator who works well with people from all walks of life, treating every patient, partner, provider and volunteer with compassion, dignity and respect.
- A burning desire to serve people in under-resourced communities.
- An entrepreneurial, self-starting spirit, comfortable building a new program from the ground up and adapting as it grows.
- Punctual and dependable, with a strong commitment to arriving on time and prepared for every screening event and appointment.
Preferred
- Established connections in the local community, such as relationships with churches, nonprofits, social service agencies or healthcare providers in the service area.
- Connections in the optometry and eye care community in Orangeburg County and the surrounding counties.
- Experience with Canva, Apricot and Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Docs and Sheets).
- Experience with driving large vehicles, their mechanics and maintenance.
