FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt/Hourly

JOB SUMMARY: Performs responsible job search training activities in a classroom setting that provides SEMCA participants with the ability to seek employment effectively. Working in partnership with Career Coaches and staff to support jobseekers in navigating and connecting to essential services required to remove barriers. These can include transportation, childcare, housing, legal aid, or adult basic education. This role will serve as the expert in understanding the Career Center’s various partners and the support they offer, including eligibility and referral process. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Designs and facilitates career development and life skills workshops, including self-assessment, goal setting, workplace conduct and appearance, resume writing, job search strategies, networking, interviewing, and other related subjects. 
  2. Administration of career and job readiness assessment instruments.
  3. Modifies curriculum and materials as required to meet individual and program needs.
  4. Utilizes various teaching resources to develop customers’ knowledge of the subject area.
  5. Monitors and evaluates customers' progress and prescribes corrective plans whenever necessary. 
  6. Maintains a warm atmosphere where customers feel cared for and welcome.
  7. Maintains a functional knowledge of economic and job market trends and demands and incorporates knowledge into job readiness training modules. 
  8. Develop and foster relationships with organizations that provide barrier removal/essential services that are in proximity to the career center.
  9. Creates a network of referral organizations and a resource directory to assist customers in obtaining services. It also supports using the Resource Map within its Center (launching July 2021), including training staff on its use, keeping information accurate, and sharing information with customers.
  10. Updates information on partner organizations by making routine contacts to verify services, eligibility requirements, and referral processes.
  11. Identify gaps within the referral partner network and collaborate with the funder Implementation Coordinator to identify potential partners.
  12. Advocates for and connects customers to community services and assists in assessing available support services.
  13. Follows up with customers and partner organizations on the status of barrier/referral resolution and provides updates to career coaches.
  14. Maintains accurate and up-to-date participant activity data and other related information in data systems.
  15. Assists in maintaining an accurate record (file) system for each program participant.
  16. Compiles program statistics and prepares regularly scheduled related reports for submission as required by SER and the funding source.
  17. Provide participants with public benefits information and train them as navigators in the MI Bridges system.
  18. Contributes to the team effort by performing other duties as assigned

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A high school degree or equivalent (GED), associate degree, or a combination of education and experience in social work, counseling, human services, or a related field is preferred.
  2. Computer skills necessary to utilize word processing and spreadsheet software applications and maintain required documentation.
  3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate, build professional relationships with, and provide accurate information to community partners and program participants.
  4. Desire and ability to work with a diverse group of people, particularly those living in low-income distressed neighborhoods.
  5. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  6. General knowledge of Career Center services and programs.
  7. Knowledge of relevant office equipment.
  8. Ability to interact with customers in a positive and productive manner.
  9. Ability to input basic data into a personal computer.
  10. Ability to prepare routine reports, file records correctly, and type materials as requested
  11. Ability to effectively read and interpret written procedures.
  12. Knowledge of or ability to learn data tracking and management information systems.
  13. Experience with adult learners in a nontraditional environment desired.
  14. Knowledge and understanding of instructional and classroom techniques.
  15. Knowledge of basic education principles, practices, and techniques for adult learning.
  16. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  17. Ability to plan and organize effectively.
  18. Bilingual language skills in English/Spanish or English/Arabic is a plus.
  19. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this position successfully. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time, and have sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a phone, computer keyboard, and other office equipment. Must be able to lift a minimum of 10 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. - This job operates in a normal office environment with a noise level that is, at times, moderately loud with a little discomfort due to noise, dirt, dust, and the like. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and, fax machines.
