Staff Development Nurse
The primary purpose of this position is to provide leadership and oversight for the clinical education, competency, and development of nursing and support staff, while ensuring the highest standards of resident care are maintained in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. The Staff Development Nurse supports the Director of Nursing Services (DNS) and Administrator by coordinating staff training, clinical quality initiatives, and personnel onboarding processes to promote a culture of clinical excellence, compliance, and professional growth throughout the Facility.
Clinical and Administrative Leadership
- Assist the Director of Nursing Services in planning, organizing, and directing the nursing department’s day-to-day operations in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Provide ongoing clinical oversight and leadership to ensure high-quality, person-centered resident care.
- Develop and maintain current nursing policies, procedures, and standards of practice.
- Conduct rounds to assess care delivery, staff performance, and resident outcomes.
- Serve as a clinical resource for RNs, LPNs, and CNAs, fostering strong communication and teamwork.
- Monitor quality assurance indicators, survey outcomes, and incident reports, and assist in implementing performance improvement plans.
- Participate in developing and updating resident care plans, ensuring the nursing team provides care consistent with the individualized plan.
- Evaluate clinical competencies and assist with staff evaluations and performance improvement planning.
- Ensure nursing documentation meets state and federal standards, reflecting the resident’s response to care and treatment.
Education, Training, and Staff Development
- Plan, develop, coordinate, and evaluate all Facility-wide educational and in-service programs for nursing and non-nursing staff.
- Conduct orientation and onboarding programs for new employees, ensuring understanding of Facility policies, clinical protocols, infection control, and resident rights.
- Design and implement annual mandatory training programs (OSHA, HIPAA, Abuse Prevention, Infection Control, Fire and Safety, etc.).
- Provide clinical skills training and refresher courses for licensed nurses and nursing assistants, maintaining current documentation of completion.
- Maintain compliance with continuing education requirements for all nursing staff, supporting license renewals and competency validation.
- Identify learning needs through observation, quality audits, and feedback, developing targeted educational interventions.
- Collaborate with department heads to ensure interdisciplinary education and communication across all levels of staff.
- Stay current on nursing practices, regulatory updates, and professional education trends through participation in professional organizations, seminars, and continuing education.
Human Resources and Compliance Support
- Collaborate with Corporate Human Resource staff to ensure accurate and timely onboarding, credentialing, and personnel documentation.
- Support the recruitment, selection, and retention of qualified nursing personnel through mentoring and education.
- Participate in employee counseling, corrective action, and performance management, ensuring adherence to Facility policies and fair employment practices.
- Maintain confidentiality of personnel and resident information in compliance with HIPAA and Facility policy.
- Maintain accurate records of training attendance, employee competencies, and annual evaluations.
- Assist with monitoring employee injuries, Workers’ Compensation claims, and OSHA documentation as applicable.
- Support employee wellness initiatives and morale-building programs to enhance retention and satisfaction.
Quality Assurance and Safety
- Actively participate in Facility Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives.
- Ensure staff are properly trained and equipped to handle resident emergencies and disaster preparedness procedures in collaboration with Administrator and Maintenance Director.
- Conduct audits and rounds to monitor compliance with safety standards, infection control, and proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Collaborate with department directors to correct deficiencies and reinforce best practices in safety and sanitation.
Committee and Communication Functions
- Serve as chair or active member of the Quality Assurance, Safety, and Corporate Compliance Committees.
- Attend department head and leadership meetings, providing updates on staff education, compliance, and development goals.
- Communicate effectively with all levels of staff, management, residents, and regulatory agencies to promote Facility goals.
- Provide reports and recommendations to the Director of Nursing Services and Administrator regarding training, staffing, and clinical performance.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Must possess a current, unencumbered license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Ohio.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred; Associate Degree required.
- Minimum of two (2) years’ supervisory experience in a skilled nursing or long-term care setting.
- Demonstrated experience in staff education, clinical training, or nurse development preferred.
- Knowledge of nursing practice, regulatory compliance, and infection control standards required.
Skills and General Requirements

- Knowledge of nursing home regulations (CMS, ODH, OSHA) and quality improvement processes.
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines.
