The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) at Serenity Oaks IRF works under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist to implement physical therapy treatment plans and assist rehabilitation inpatients in achieving functional mobility and independence goals. The PTA delivers skilled therapeutic interventions, monitors patient response to treatment, and communicates clinical observations to the supervising PT. This role is integral to delivering high-quality, high-intensity rehabilitation services consistent with CMS IRF standards and CIHQ Medical Rehabilitation Standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implement physical therapy treatment plans as established by the supervising Physical Therapist.
- Administer therapeutic exercise, functional mobility training, balance activities, and gait training as directed.
- Monitor patient response to treatment and report significant changes or concerns to the supervising PT.
- Assist with GG motor scoring as directed and supervised by the PT.
- Maintain accurate and timely daily treatment notes in the EHR per facility and regulatory requirements.
- Assist patients with transfers, positioning, and safe mobility using proper body mechanics and assistive devices.
- Provide patient and family education on home exercise techniques and safe mobility strategies as directed by the PT.
- Set up and clean therapy equipment; maintain a safe and organized therapy environment.
- Communicate patient progress, concerns, and treatment outcomes to the supervising PT.
- Participate in IDT meetings as directed; contribute PT aide observations to IDT discussions.
- Assist with fitting and instruction on assistive devices including crutches, walkers, and wheelchairs.
- Participate in facility education, competency training, and CIHQ program evaluation activities.
- Adhere to APTA PTA standards of practice and Louisiana PTA scope of practice regulations.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Required: Associate of Applied Science (AAS) or higher degree in Physical Therapist Assisting from a CAPTE-accredited program.
- Preferred: One (1) or more years of PTA experience in an inpatient rehabilitation or acute care setting.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
- Required: Current, unrestricted Physical Therapy Assistant license issued by the Louisiana Physical Therapy Board (LAPTB).
- Required: Current BLS/CPR certification (AHA or Red Cross).
- Required: Louisiana PTA license must be verified through LAPTB prior to and throughout employment.
- Note: All PTA practice at Serenity Oaks is performed under the supervision of a licensed PT in compliance with Louisiana law.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of physical therapy treatment techniques for rehabilitation patient populations.
- Ability to implement PT plans of care under PT supervision and within PTA scope of practice.
- Understanding of GG motor scoring and IRF documentation in PTA context.
- Effective communication skills for reporting to supervising PT and interacting with patients.
- Knowledge of safe patient handling, transfer techniques, and assistive device use.
- Proficiency with EHR daily note documentation.
- Knowledge of gait training techniques and therapeutic exercise progressions.
