Residential Substance Abuse Counselor
The Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for providing confidential addictions counseling, education and support to individuals and their families promoting health lifestyles and healthy choices. The counselor hours are 9AM to 5PM Tuesday through Friday and 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday.

Reports to: Clinical Director
SCOPE: The Substance Abuse Counselor provides daily and weekly individual and group counseling, education, and support to individuals and families struggling with addiction at Serenity Light Recovery for Detox and Residential levels of care. This includes clients struggling with chronic relapse, and co-occurring disorders. The counselor will be familiar with other services and resources in the community and work closely to provide information and support and referrals when required. Serenity Light Recovery promotes a healthy, addiction-free lifestyle that will ensure the health and wellness of individuals, family members and the community.
The counselor will arrange 1-2x family sessions during the 30 day stay and arrange for family members and/or other support persons to come to our monthly Family Program at Serenity Light Recovery Angleton.
Roles of the Counselor include:
- Providing substance abuse counseling for assigned and non assigned clients as needed when primary counselors are out. This includes individual and group therapy, and assisting with providing therapy during any crisis situations.
- Interfaces with the Director and other program staff in decision-making involving clients and attends all clinical meetings/staffing/training.
- Complete biopsychosocial assessments and provide diagnosis using DSM-IV criteria.
- Obtain previous records or collaborate with outside providers (with ROI consent in place) that are relevant to the current treatment episode.
- Preparing and reviewing the client master treatment plan.
- Development of UR notes and the client discharge/continuum of care plan to ensure movement to the appropriate levels of care.
- Participating fully as a member of a multidisciplinary team for assigned clients.
- Documenting all counseling and education services, assessments, reassessments, referrals and follow-up in the client’s clinical record using the EMR (Alleva).
- Maintain client caseload (including all case management as required).
- Treatment planning and review duties and clinical charting as required.
- Provide coordination of support services for the client and record the services provided in the client’s clinical record.
- Reassessment of the client and revision to the master treatment plan as needed.
- Contact and coordination with referral sources (i.e. legal, school, employer, etc.).
- Facilitate needed interventions for crisis-oriented issues utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach for assigned clients (assist with AMA protocol).
- Carry out administrative and clinical functions as requested.
- Act in accordance with Serenity Light Recovery policies and federal confidentiality laws (42-CFR, and Texas DSHS state rules and regulations).
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Associates, Bachelor or Masters’ Degree specializing in psychology and/or counseling.
- LCDC with a current and up to date license.
- Previous work experience in the field of substance abuse.
