This role focuses on supporting new patient intake for individuals with new-onset acute back pain, pre‑operative and post‑procedural management of interventional pain patients, and the performance of lower‑acuity pain procedures within the APP’s scope of practice. The APP functions as an integral member of the multidisciplinary pain management team, promoting high‑quality, efficient, and evidence‑based care.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Management

  • Manage pre‑operative evaluations for interventional pain procedures, including medical optimization, medication review, patient education, and informed consent support (as applicable).
  • Provide post‑procedure follow‑up care, including pain assessment, complication monitoring, medication adjustments, and coordination of ongoing care.
  • Conduct comprehensive new patient evaluations for individuals presenting with new-onset acute back pain, including history, physical examination, initial assessment, and care planning.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with supervising/interventional pain physicians.
  • Perform and assist with lower‑acuity pain management procedures consistent with training, credentialing, and state scope of practice (e.g., trigger point injections, joint injections, follow‑up procedural assessments).
  • Prescribe medications in accordance with state and federal regulations, organizational policy, and best practices for pain management.

Care Coordination & Patient Experience

  • Serve as a clinical resource for patients and families regarding diagnosis, procedures, treatment expectations, and recovery.
  • Coordinate care with nursing, physical therapy, imaging, primary care, and specialty services to ensure timely and seamless care delivery.
  • Support timely patient throughput by facilitating diagnostic workups and scheduling for interventional procedures.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to evidence‑based pain management protocols and safety guidelines.
  • Monitor outcomes and contribute to quality improvement initiatives related to pain care delivery and patient satisfaction.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation within the electronic medical record.

Collaboration & Professional Practice

  • Work collaboratively with pain management physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff to support clinic and procedure‑based workflows.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary case discussions, clinical meetings, and ongoing program development.
  • Maintain required licensure, certification, and continuing education relevant to pain management practice.

Qualifications

Required

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
  • Current, active APP licensure in the state of practice.
  • National certification appropriate to discipline (e.g., AANP, ANCC, NCCPA).
  • Eligibility for hospital and clinic credentialing and privileging.
  • DEA license (or eligible to obtain).

Preferred

  • Prior experience in pain management, interventional spine, orthopedics, neurology, or musculoskeletal medicine.
  • Experience managing patients with acute and chronic back pain.
  • Familiarity with interventional pain procedures and peri‑procedural patient management.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills related to back pain and musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Excellent patient communication and education abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining close collaboration with supervising physicians.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage patient flow in a high‑volume clinical setting.
  • Commitment to safe, compassionate, and patient‑focused pain management.
