About the Senoia Area Historical Society Museum

Located in the historic 1870s Carmichael House at 6 Couch Street, the Senoia Area Historical Society Museum serves as the steward of the community’s cultural legacy. Since opening in 2010, the Museum has provided free public access every Saturday and Sunday, supported entirely by volunteers and community members. The Society’s mission is to secure, preserve, and promote the social and cultural history of Senoia through public programs, collections stewardship, and preservation advocacy.

Position Summary

The Museum Director is the Museum’s sole paid position and is responsible for providing leadership, organization, and strategic direction to ensure the successful operation of the Museum. The Director manages day-to-day museum functions, collections stewardship, volunteer coordination, public engagement, and administrative planning, while upholding the highest standards of museum practice and historical preservation.

This role requires a self-directed and mission-driven professional with the ability to collaborate with a dedicated volunteer Board and team of docents, serve as the Museum’s public representative, and foster a welcoming visitor experience.

Key Responsibilities

Museum Operations & Administration

  • Manage day-to-day museum functions, open hours, scheduling, and general visitor services.
  • Maintain operating policies, records, budgets, and monthly/annual reporting to the Board.
  • Communicate maintenance or facility needs and support smooth operation of the historic house museum.

Volunteer Coordination & Public Engagement

  • Recruit, train, and schedule docents and volunteers to support museum hours and events.
  • Represent the Museum to visitors, partners, and the community through tours, presentations, and outreach.
  • Assist with promotional activities and coordinate with volunteers supporting website or social media content.

Collections Management

  • Document, catalog, and care for museum objects, archival materials, and digital records in accordance with accepted museum standards.
  • Manage acquisition processes, donor paperwork, and inventory tracking.
  • Maintain policies and procedures that ensure responsible stewardship and preservation of the collection.

Exhibits, Programs & Interpretation

  • Support the development and maintenance of permanent and temporary exhibits.
  • Create or update signage, interpretive text, and basic educational materials to enhance visitor understanding.
  • Participate in planning and delivery of public programs, talks, and community history initiatives.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Public History, Art History, Anthropology, Historic Preservation, or related field

or 1-2 years’ experience in a museum, archive, cultural heritage, or nonprofit setting.

  • Knowledge of museum collections care, handling, and documentation standards.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills, including project planning and reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and volunteer or visitor interaction.
  • Ability to work independently, think creatively, and solve problems with limited supervision.
  • Comfort working with and leading volunteers of diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in small museum operations or nonprofit cultural organizations.
  • Experience with PastPerfect or similar collections management systems.
  • Knowledge of (or interest in learning) Senoia area history and heritage.
  • Experience designing or contributing to exhibits, tours, or educational programming.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to work Saturdays and Sundays during museum opening hours and occasional special events.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and use stairs in a historic building.
  • Position may include a mix of onsite and remote work as appropriate.

Pay: From $20.00 per hour
