On-Call / Floater Caregiver – Virginia Beach / Chesapeake

Seniors Helping Seniors - Hampton Roads VA
Virginia, VA Full Time | Part Time
POSTED ON 8/29/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 12/26/2026

Are you a dependable caregiver who enjoys variety and can step in when clients need extra support?

Seniors Helping Seniors® Hampton Roads is looking for a compassionate and flexible On-Call/Floater Caregiver to support clients across Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and surrounding areas.

This role is ideal for someone who is comfortable working with different clients, schedules, and care needs and is willing to step in for open shifts, caregiver call-outs, emergencies, vacations, and temporary coverage.

You may work with one client one day and a different client the next—so we're looking for someone who can quickly adapt while providing the same level of patience, respect, and dependable care every time.

What You'll Do

As a Floater Caregiver, you may be asked to provide:

  • Companionship and socialization through conversation, activities, and meaningful interaction

  • Personal care assistance, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, and mobility assistance

  • Support for seniors living with Alzheimer's, dementia, and memory-related conditions

  • Meal preparation and grocery shopping, including preparing meals according to dietary needs

  • Medication reminders and assistance with staying on schedule

  • Light housekeeping, including laundry, linens, dusting, sweeping, and vacuuming

  • Transportation to medical appointments, errands, outings, and social activities

  • Running errands and helping with everyday tasks

  • Safety and fall-prevention support around the home

  • Pet care when appropriate and available

  • Respite and supportive care for families who need an extra helping hand

Services and assignments will vary depending on the individual client's needs.

This Role Is for You If You Are:

  • Highly dependable - When a client needs coverage, they can count on you.

  • Flexible - You're comfortable accepting different shifts, clients, and assignments.

  • Adaptable - You can quickly learn a new client's routine, preferences, and care needs.

  • Compassionate - You genuinely enjoy helping older adults and treating them with dignity.

  • Patient and understanding - You recognize that every client has a different personality, routine, and level of independence.

  • A strong communicator - You can communicate professionally with clients, families, caregivers, and the office team.

  • Observant and responsible - You notice changes or concerns and communicate them appropriately.

  • Comfortable with change - You don't need the same client or schedule every day to provide excellent care.

What Makes a Great Floater?

We're looking for someone who can walk into an unfamiliar home and make the client feel comfortable.

You should be able to quickly ask: "What does a good day look like for you?"

Then listen, learn the client's routine, and provide support without taking away their independence.

Because you'll work with multiple clients, professionalism, emotional intelligence, and adaptability are just as important as caregiving skills.

Requirements

  • Previous caregiving experience preferred; training may be available for qualified candidates

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work with different clients and care needs

  • Reliable transportation when transportation is required for an assignment

  • Valid driver's license and auto insurance when applicable

  • Weekend, evening, overnight, or short-notice availability is a plus

  • Must meet applicable Virginia requirements, including DMV check and drug screening

On-Call Availability

As a floater, your availability may include:

  • Same-day or short-notice coverage

  • Caregiver call-outs

  • Vacation coverage

  • Temporary assignments

  • Open shifts

  • Weekend and evening coverage

  • Overnight shifts when available
