Music Educator / Therapeutic Music Specialist (K–12 Special Needs)
We are seeking a compassionate, creative, and adaptable music professional to provide engaging music instruction while incorporating therapeutic music techniques for K–12 students with diverse emotional, behavioral, developmental, and physical needs.
This unique position blends music education with therapeutic approaches, helping students develop music skills while fostering emotional regulation, self-expression, confidence, and meaningful participation.
Instruction is provided in a traveling classroom model, with the instructor moving from classroom to classroom throughout the school day rather than students coming to a music room. The first class begins at 8:40 a.m., and the final session concludes at 2:40 p.m.
The ideal candidate is able to balance thoughtful planning with flexibility. Lessons should be purposeful, engaging, and adapted to meet the individual needs of each classroom and student. Success in this role requires the ability to read the room, respond intuitively to changing circumstances, and modify activities while maintaining educational and therapeutic goals.
Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential. The instructor will work closely with classroom teachers, aides, therapists, and other school staff, while also maintaining regular communication with Senior Music Connection, the hiring organization.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Experience working with children in grades K–12 with special and diverse needs.
- Knowledge of music education principles and the ability to teach age-appropriate musical concepts.
- The ability to incorporate therapeutic music techniques that promote emotional regulation, communication, self-expression, and engagement.
- Flexibility and creativity in adapting lessons to meet varying abilities and classroom dynamics.
- Excellent classroom management and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to develop purposeful lesson plans while remaining responsive to students' immediate needs.
- A collaborative spirit and professional communication with school personnel and Senior Music Connection.
