Senior Center Manager

People Helping People has been the foundation of Senior Friendship Centers for over 50 years, and we are looking for a dynamic Senior Center Manager! The Senior Center Manager will be responsible for managing Sarasota’s Senior Center activities including the initiation, coordination, and implementation of programs for members and visitors to have access to social, recreational, health, and educational programs. We’re looking for someone who enjoys being the welcoming face of the center staying at the heart of the action while also thriving behind the scenes by coordinating the logistics that keep daily operations running smoothly. The Senior Center Manager will also participate in outreach activities by informing the public of Senior Friendship Centers’ services. 

 

The Activity Centers at Senior Friendship Centers create community in every sense of the word. They offer seniors a space to take classes, exercise, play cards, socialize, create art, listen to live music, learn a new language, learn about healthy aging, or sit down with friends over coffee. Senior Friendship Centers is the safety net for seniors in four counties along Southwest Florida, providing a wide variety of programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage the Senior Center. Manage staff and volunteers. Schedule and participate in the marketing and community involvement for the center. 
  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers for all areas within the Senior Center. 
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate social, recreational, cultural, health, wellness, economic and educational programs and activities to enrich the lives of participants. Contact outside agencies and individuals to donate time and talent for the benefit of SFC’s programs and activities.  
  • Responsible for the arrangement and participation in speaking engagements and events. Develop and promote partnerships with community individuals and businesses.
  • Oversee the notification and processing of membership renewals. Encourage donations from center participants and promote membership and collection of program fees.
  • Oversee the development of outreach materials, which includes the development and update of PowerPoint presentations, creation and distribution of flyers, and written communication with community partners. 
  • Arrange special events and fundraising activities in coordination with SFC’s Development Department. 
  • Must become knowledgeable about the different funding sources for the Center and participate in fundraising and SFC awareness-building events.                                
  • Provide the Center’s data for grants and contracts. Oversee the preparation of monthly and quarterly reports on activities and attendance. Conducts surveys per grant requirements. 
  • Ensure the data entry of Center information into multiple databases; including accurate and timely record-keeping, documentation, and monthly reports.
  • Oversee the preparation of daily monies per fiscal department policy, including reconciliation and deposits. 
  • Provide backup in the daily oversight of the Senior Center when the Senior Center Assistant is out of the office. 
  • Oversee the operation of the Star-to-Star Telephone System.
  • Oversee the creation and proofing of the Prime Times. 
  • Work closely with supervisors and managers to coordinate site activities.
  • Open and prepare the senior center daily and secure the building at the end of each day.  
  • Report any incident of abuse or neglect as mandated by state guidelines.
  • Attend staff meetings, training, and seminars as required.
  • Must comply with all Senior Friendship Centers’ personnel policies.
  • Must protect the safety and health of staff, volunteers, participants, and others by observing and following the organization’s safety and incident policies.

Education, Experience, Licenses, and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social work, human services, or a related field is required. An equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, ability, and skills to perform the essential functions of the job, will be considered. 

  • A minimum of three years of experience in social, cultural, and recreational services is preferred. 

  • Requires a minimum of two years in a supervisory capacity. 

  • Advanced computer skills are required; including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), database management, and the ability to learn other software programs utilized by the organization for Center management. 

 

Physical Demands: 

  • Prolonged periods sitting, working on a computer, standing, and walking.

  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds.

  • Must be able to independently access various departments of a given location.

  • Must be able to assist potentially frail seniors in wheelchairs or using assistive devices as they move through program areas.

 

Travel: 

  • Travel may be required to complete administrative tasks or to other program sites to assist. 

  • Must have reliable transportation. 

  • A valid driver’s license and proof of insurance are required for all work-related travel.    

 

Additional eligibility requirements:

  • Satisfactory clearance of a fingerprint-based, level II background screening and pre-employment substance abuse testing is required.  

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

It is required by Section 435.04, Florida Statues for individuals working in positions of responsibility or trust. Level 2 screening helps ensure that people who care for children, seniors, and vulnerable populations are safe and trustworthy.
