Job Description

  • What is the scope of this person's responsibilities?

To assist the design team in their daily work and to complete special assignments. The design team has responsibility for systems engineering and integration, system design, structural analysis, thermal/flow analysis, R&D testing, and new product implementation. Must work well in a team environment. This role is a preparatory role for company future hires in the Design Engineering department for a competitive advantage.

This person is to help the design team accomplish projects focused on developing new products, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the design group, and the company.

  • What are the most important objectives you need this person to achieve? (AT LEAST FIVE).

To Support The Team In The Following Areas

    • Data reduction and analysis
    • Structural/thermal/flow analysis
    • R&D testing support
    • Technical documentation generation
    • Programming/automation of design tools
    • New product manufacturing implementation

  • In addition to the actions required to produce the above results, what other duties and functions will this person be responsible for?
Working with all groups within the company to complete tasks as required. Groups include, but are not limited to: Program Management, Project Engineering, Drafting, Test Lab, Operations, Quality Engineering, Purchasing, Contracts, and Shipping/Receiving.

  • Desired background (education, years and type of experience, skills and knowledge, etc.):
    • Working on, or recently graduated with, a BS/MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Physics.
    • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Proficient in MATLAB or equivalent, or at least one programming language (VBA or Python preferred).
    • A majority of coursework completed in basic physics, calculus, and strength of materials.
    • Can demonstrate ability to face unfamiliar problems by application of first principles of engineering and physics.
    • Can demonstrate competence, backed by examples of actual execution.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to break down complex projects into actionable and measurable tasks.

  • What are the growth possibilities for the person who fills this position?
The intern position can lead to becoming an Aerospace Engineer, or can lead to other technical positions within the organization, depending on need and aptitude. At any given time, approximately 25% of the Engineering and Programs department employees were at one time interns with the company. Historically, approximately 50% of interns have been offered positions based on intern performance and job availability.

  • What are the company expectations of an intern?
    • Works hourly. Must work 24-40 hours per week. Schedule is flexible to account for coursework; to be agreed upon with direct supervisor.
    • Must work physically on site, typically in a cubicle environment.
    • In addition to various daily duties will perform at least one primary project during the term of employment, which will be reported on and presented in a team review environment.
Qualifications

Working on, or recently graduated with, a BS/MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Physics. Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Proficient in MATLAB or equivalent, or at least one programming language (VBA or Python preferred). A majority of coursework completed in basic physics, calculus, and strength of materials.

Additional Information

Target Rate = $25/hour

Monday - Friday Maximum 35 hours per week
