Position Description:
Are you a strategic event leader who thrives on delivering world-class experiences that drive member engagement and organizational impact?

We’re seeking an accomplished Director, Meetings, Events & Convention to own a high-visibility portfolio of national conferences, conventions, and member events for a leading trade association in Washington, DC. In this pivotal role, you’ll blend big-picture strategy with hands-on execution—shaping innovative event experiences from concept through flawless delivery while mentoring a talented team and driving revenue growth.

This is an opportunity to step into a leadership position where your vision directly influences member value, industry presence, and financial success. If you have a proven track record scaling events in an association or nonprofit environment and love turning strategy into standing-room-only experiences, this role was made for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for an assigned portfolio of meetings, conventions, and events, ensuring every experience aligns with organizational mission, brand, and revenue goals
  • Lead end-to-end event planning and execution: site selection, vendor/contract negotiation, budget management, registration, housing, A/V, F&B, speaker/VIP management, and on-site operations
  • Develop and mentor team members while fostering cross-departmental collaboration (Marketing, Education, Sponsorships, etc.)
  • Drive innovation by identifying new program formats, enhancing attendee experience, and leveraging data/analytics to refine future events
  • Own financial performance: build and manage detailed budgets, track expenses, reconcile post-event, and maximize sponsorship fulfillment
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for internal stakeholders, vendors, venues, speakers, sponsors, and chapters
  • Represent the organization at industry events to stay ahead of trends and elevate brand visibility

Required Skills/Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (any field)
  • 7 years of progressive experience in meetings, events, and convention management—association or nonprofit experience strongly preferred
  • Proven success independently planning and executing both small/high-touch and large-scale (1,000 attendees) events from concept to completion
  • Demonstrated budget ownership (P&L responsibility) and contract negotiation experience
  • Experience leading and developing direct reports
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel); familiarity with event platforms (Cvent, Eventbrite, etc.) a plus
  • Ability to travel ~30% domestically and occasionally lift up to 40 lbs

Preferred Skills & Attributes:

  • Strategic mindset with the ability to translate data and member feedback into innovative programming
  • Exceptional project management skills; thrives in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines
  • Polished communication and relationship-building skills—comfortable engaging C-suite executives, sponsors, and volunteers
  • Passion for the association/not-for-profit mission space
  • CMP, CMM, DES, or similar certification is a strong plus
