The
Chief Engineer is responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of all engineering, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems across the hotel, restaurant, and spa. This leadership role requires overseeing the engineering team, managing repairs and maintenance, adhering to budgetary guidelines, ensuring compliance with safety
standards, and supporting sustainability initiatives. To be successful in this role, the Chief Engineer will develop and maintain courteous and professional relationships with other department heads and staff members and will ensure the entire Maintenance team is held to the same standard. This requires training, coaching, follow-up supervision, as well as implementing disciplinary measures where appropriate to maintain all operating and safety standards within the facility. The Chief Engineer also requires clear, concise written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills and excellent time management and technical skills.
Essential Functions:
- Flexible hours required. Must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays. Overnights and On-call shifts will be required as needed for coverage and emergencies
- Perform all spa maintenance duties in the absence of a spa maintenance technician, whether that be days off or due to an open position
- Maintain a safe and efficient operation of the entire hotel facility, including physical building structure, outdoor hotel groundskeeping, all mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, including life safety and code requirements existing and new.
- Perform daily inspections of the building and grounds to ensure cleanliness, safety, and integrity for guests and employees. Note and promptly address any items that need attention.
- Ability to operate snow removal and all groundskeeping equipment is required.
- Maintain current & accurate knowledge of the property electrical, plumbing, and mechanical fields, building systems and construction.
- Strong focus on drywall installation and repair, mudding, caulking, trim work, painting, and over skills in hotel refurbishment and preventative maintenance are required.
- Implement preventive maintenance programs for guest rooms, public areas, and all other mechanical rooms and equipment to ensure optimal guest experiences and efficient longevity of all assets.
- Manage routine repairs, troubleshooting, and emergency response for equipment breakdowns.
- Ensure that the hotel, restaurant, and spa comply with all safety regulations, codes, and industry standards.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding environmental, health, and safety matters.
- Monitor expenditures and identify areas to reduce costs without compromising quality or safety.
- Source and negotiate with vendors for equipment, parts, and services. It is advised to gather at least 3 proposals, when possible, for all repairs and purchases.
- Lead and manage construction or renovation projects, ensuring work is completed on time and within budget.
- Ensure that all project decisions have been approved by the appropriate General Manager prior to the start of the project and at any critical decision-making time.
- Collaborate with architects, designers, and contractors during new construction or major renovations.
- Maintain detailed records of all repairs, maintenance, and inspections.
- Maintain an organized system within the department for inventory, maintenance, and storage of tools, materials and equipment necessary to execute the required activities of the department.
- Generate regular reports on the condition of the facility and any engineering issues requiring attention.
- Develop and maintain records of all installations, repairs, and scheduled/cyclical services for all equipment.
- Communicate equipment replacement needs with the General Manager (and Spa General Manager as appropriate) to ensure proper budgeting for Capital Expenditures can be completed.
- Partner with leadership team to develop and implement emergency response plans for engineering-related issues (power outages, plumbing failures, etc.).
- Ensure that Maintenance and other key staff members are trained and ready to handle emergencies quickly and efficiently.
- Lead, train, and supervise the engineering team (technicians, maintenance workers, etc.).
- Coordinate schedules for maintenance, repairs, and emergencies to minimize disruptions.
- Provide technical guidance and support to the team and ensure ongoing skill development.
- Maintain consistent communication and collaboration with all departments, including management and staff members.
- Check email, voicemail, and maintenance log on a consistent basis daily: at least three times a day.
- Assist other departments such as Housekeeping and Banquets with operational needs as dictated by business and staffing levels.
Job specific and physical requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalen required. College degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years previous hotel or apartment maintenance experience required.
- CPO Certification required, or agreement to obtain certification within the first 90 days of employment.
- Ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers, some of whom will require high levels of patience, tact, and diplomacy to defuse anger.
- Collect accurate information and resolve conflicts.
- Ability to access and accurately input information using a moderately complex computer system.
- Ability to observe and detect signs of emergency situations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, customers, and patrons.
- Must have excellent customer service & communication skills.
- Consistent standing for up to 8 hours
- Limited bending and crouching.
- Moderate to frequent lifting of up to 75lbs (team lifts encouraged); regular lift/carry/push/pull up to 25lbs
- Required auditory ability with or without assistance devices; all devices must be in optimal operating condition
- Required close visual acuity with or without corrective devices for detailed projects/repairs, and reading fine print
- Command of the English language, both written and spoken.
