First Grade Stationary Engineer

Job Summary

Under general supervision, to serve as the operating Engineer on a shift in the Central Power Plant, responsible for the operations and maintenance of gas and oil-fired boilers, Centrifugal Chillers, and the supporting auxiliary equipment needed to provide uninterrupted steam and chilled water to campus facilities.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Operates boilers, centrifugal chillers, and ancillary equipment efficiently as prescribed by the Chief Engineer
• Read gauges and meters, and record readings indicating conditions of operating equipment and systems
• Keeps maintenance records and records of materials and supplies used
• Conducts chemical tests on boiler and make-up water and adjust chemical feed pumps as necessary

Qualifications and Skills

• High School diploma or equivalent and five years’ experience in the operation of a boiler room facility, three years of which involved boilers over 500 horsepower and chillers in excess of 500 tons.
• Thorough knowledge of and skill in applying OSHA regulations related to the central plant boiler facility operations.
• Thorough knowledge of and skill in applying the principles of electricity, hydraulics, and mechanics. Ability to fire boilers, read gauges, and judge operating efficiency and safety conditions of steam boiler operations; to oversee and coordinate shift operations of the central plant facility; to work in, on, around, over, and under fixed equipment and machinery; ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces and adverse weather and temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Licensure as a First Grade Stationary Engineer in the State of Maryland required.

Pay: $37.00 - $45.00 per hour
