Annual salary is according to the Non-Bargaining Unit Personnel Salary Schedule and is commensurate with related work experience and education.

Responsibilities

This is a temporary full-time non-bargaining faculty position and is not on track for continuing contract. The standard contract length is 196 days; however, other contract lengths may be available depending on department needs.

Faculty responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching and supporting student learning
  • Developing curriculum
  • Supporting college policies, procedures, and inclusiveness
  • Participating in department and college activities and committees including graduation
  • Attending college wide meetings and trainings at various campuses and locations

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Provide instruction for courses in Fire Fighting PSAV utilizing multiple teaching methodologies and strategies to help students achieve learning outcomes. Assigned campus location may vary due to enrollment and will be decided by the department.

2. Keeps instruction specific knowledge current through staff development, certification testing and industry projects.

3. Maintains concise records of student participation and assists in developing appropriate reports for submission to state certification agencies.

4. Assists in maintenance of records and development of reports of program completers.

5. Assessing students in the classroom, and laboratory settings. This will involve frequent lifting of equipment (may include above the head), the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs., frequent standing for long periods of time, the ability to walk and work in small spaces, various weather conditions, and various physical environments, have tactile, auditory and visual ability sufficient to perform firefighting related work, and the working with chemicals such as gasoline, diesel, oil, and various cleaning supplies.

6. Assists in coordinating and directing the Fire Fighting PSAV programs and ensuring that the educational environment provides for effective student learning opportunities.

7. Provides assistance to the Dean, Program Manager, and faculty in maintenance of student files, and other records, reports, and instructional materials.

8. Ensures curriculum is consistent with state mandated program outcomes and disseminates any potential changes to all Fire programs faculty members.

9. Designs syllabi for each course taught, using the college accepted electronic delivery template and appropriate curriculum strategies.

10. Implements strategies to increase course and program retention and completion.

11. Acts as a program representative and liaison with state and local fire departments, and community groups, and makes presentations on the program when requested. This may involve travel to offsite locations.

12. Assists the Dean and Fire Science Program Manager in recruitment, screening, orienting, and supporting of adjunct faculty.

13. Participates in the annual program review process to evaluate and strengthen Fire Fighting PSAV programs.

14. Participates in day, evening, and weekend program staffing.

15. Maintains weekly office hours as required.

16. Participating in department, division, and general faculty meetings, applicable College committee activities, and other forms of College service.

17. Performs other site and position specific responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Associate of Science degree in Fire Science or closely related field or an Associate of Arts degree with a State of Florida Certificate of Compliance (Firefighter II), State of Florida Fire Service Instructor I Certification, and State of Florida Live Fire Training Instructor I Certification with at least six years firefighting experience.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Fire Science or related field.

2. Two years’ experience teaching Firefighting or related classes.

3. State of Florida Fire Inspector I Certification.

4. State of Florida Fire Officer I and II Certifications.

5. Fire Investigator I Certification.

6. State of Florida Pump Operator Certification

7. Experience in the development and delivery of "Distance Learning" programs.

8. Experience as a company officer or chief officer.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES & SKILLS:

1. Demonstrating psychomotor skills, evaluating affective, cognitive, and psychomotor qualities of students.

2. Ability to read, write, converse, and comprehend in fluent English.

3. Ability to listen to an individual speaking through a radio and be able to respond in an audible and intelligible manner.

4. Demonstrated knowledge regarding the Florida Curriculum for Firefighting.

5. Demonstrated knowledge of the State of Florida requirements for curriculum design, program planning, and accreditation.

6. Continuous updating of knowledge and technical expertise in the field of firefighting as well as proficiency in instruction.

7. Ability to understand and interpret College policies and procedures.

8. Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

9. Ability to understand oral and written communications.

10. Must have strong communication and public relations skills.

11. Ability to work with students from diverse background.

12. Understanding of commitment to the use of instructional technology, including distance learning, and other alternative educational delivery methods.

13. Committed to working in a multicultural environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
1. Works in classroom, laboratory, and field environments.

2. Flexible work schedule to include days and hours including nights and weekends.

3. Travels between buildings, campuses, and other local destinations.

Conditions of Employment

Finalists and individuals recommended for employment at Seminole State College must reside in the State of Florida at the time of hire and may be subject to background investigations and fingerprinting in compliance with Florida Statute 1001.64; and Seminole State College Policy 1.020; 2.020. Criminal background checks and fingerprinting will be conducted for all new employees, and for rehired employees who have had a break in service for one year or more. The Office of Human Resources will determine which background checks shall be conducted for each position, based upon its review of job descriptions and the responsibilities of the position. These include, but are not limited to, positions that have access to money, master keys, security-sensitive areas and confidential information; positions that have the capability to create, delete, and alter records; and positions that are responsible for the care and instruction of children. The College will conduct various types of background checks which may include, but are not limited to: criminal background, credit check, driver's license check, previous employment and references.
