Description

Under limited supervision, performs skilled technical work in the operation of complex equipment in the maintenance and construction of roads and drainage facilities. Also involves office duties and extensive exposure to work in field conditions.

**Salary will be determined depending on qualifications of candidates who exceed the minimum requirements as outlined within the job description.

**Additional compensation based on licensure.

Essential Functions

Operates heavy equipment to include but not limited to: Dump trucks, steel wheel rollers, mixers, front end loaders, skid steer loaders, fork lifts, backhoes, hydraulic boom mowers, graders, mini track excavators, gradalls, vacuum trucks, bull dozers, material sifters, crawling excavators, track excavators, low boys, and other equipment as assigned to complete road construction and maintenance projects.
Performs daily pre-trip inspections, preventive maintenance and minor mechanical maintenance work on assigned equipment. Keeps records and submits reports on work performed, as required. Observes and reports road deficiencies which can not be corrected within assigned maintenance responsibilities to the immediate supervisor. Answers routine questions for the public.
Maintains inventory of assigned equipment and supplies. Loads and stocks materials at storage yards. Orders material when needed. Sifts materials and stores for future use; keeps the material/equipment yard clean and orderly. Operates vacuum trucks to maintain proper drainage of the stormwater conveyance system.
Responds to emergency situations as needed. Adheres to proper safety standards and procedures. Maintains all safety equipment and related records. Communicates with public, County staff and external vendors in a professional and courteous manner. Writes material tickets and submits copies for billing purposes. Receives purchased materials for maintenance/operational purposes.
Additional Duties:
Performs other related work as required, and operate other equipment as assigned to complete road construction and maintenance projects.
In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years experience in the maintenance and construction of roads and drainage facilities.

A comparable amount of education, training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Preference will be given to applicants with experience/training in the operation of gradalls, front end loaders, bulldozers, track excavators, motor graders, and material sifters.
Must possess or obtain within 6 months of employment, certification in "Work Zone Safety" from IMSA, Confined Space Entry Training; NIMS Certification; Erosion Control certification; Trenching and Shoring; lift training certification; OSHA requirements or other certifications as required by work assignment and as directed by the Division Manager.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Drivers License Class "B" and have the ability to obtain a valid Florida Commercial Drivers License Class "A" within six months of employment.

Additional Requirements

Ability to work from a general outline of duties and responsibilities.
Must possess the ability to perform technical or trades-based work that requires a solid understanding of varied types of heavy equipment. Tasks performed include operating heavy equipment (bulldozers, front end loaders, graders, etc...).
Must have considerable knowledge of the effective operation and maintenance of heavy equipment.
Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations.
Knowledge of effective precautionary measures necessary to avoid accidents and hazards involved in the use of heavy equipment.
Ability to understand and carry out general instructions, read, write and complete work records and ability to communicate effectively with the public.
Must possess the ability to perform routine or clearly defined activities under limited supervision.
Be able to maintain good physical condition sufficient to satisfactorily perform job duties, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
Ability to deal with the public in an effective and cooperative manner.
Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems, computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
Must be able to perform physically demanding job duties under adverse weather conditions and have the ability to lift more than 80 pounds.
Ability to see (perceive color, depth, and texture), smell, hear (preferably at above average levels), and speak.

Salary : $38,896 - $50,565
