Position/Title: Head Football Coach
Department or Unit: School Assignment
Reports To: Principal and Athletic Director
Supervises: Assistant coaches, managers, trainers, and players
Job Summary: The Head Coach is responsible for all aspects of the football program. The coach must demonstrate strong leadership
player and staff development, sportsmanship, integrity and character development. Qualified candidates should
possess strong communication and organizational skills. They must demonstrate exceptional knowledge of the skills
They must demonstrate exceptional knowledge of the skills and strategies of the sport of football as it pertains to
interscholastic athletics in Alabama.
Typical Duties:
- Foster among the participants and spectators an appreciation of the values of athletics, a desire to perform at the highest level, an attitude of good sportsmanship, and a sense of pride in self, team, school, and community.
- Direct the training, conditioning, and performance of the football program and lead and supervise, the assistant coaches in their efforts with teams assigned to them.
- Demonstrate current knowledge of strength and conditioning programs for football. Execute such programs during the off-season within the parameter of AHSAA regulations.
- Emphasize the importance of academic excellence and assist in monitoring and maintain high academic standards for members of the football program. Become actively involved with the college recruiting process for team members.
- Make recommendations to the athletic director and principal in the hiring and/or retention of assistant coaches. Direct, supervise, and evaluate regularly the performance of all assistant coaches.
- Demonstrate a strong knowledge of AHSAA and NCAA rules.
- Promote the program with the school and community.
- Work cooperatively with other SHS head athletic coaches in order to operate a well-balanced athletic program.
- Collaborate with the athletic director in the preparation of schedules for the team.
- Recommend to the athletic director the type and amount of equipment and supplies needed to conduct the football program. Provide for the inventory and care of equipment.
- Insure that all athletes have a valid medical examinations and Impact Tests before they are allowed to practice.
- Assist the athletic director to ensure that lists of all players eligible for athletic contests are prepared and maintained under rules of AHSAA.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree required.
- Previous high school or college coaching is required. Previous high school head coaching experience preferred.
- Valid Alabama Teacher certification.
