We are seeking a Development Associate to join our team!
The Development, Policy and Impact (DPI) Associate I performs a key role in securing funding to support Self-Help’s community initiatives and programming. While this work includes prospecting and developing relationships with potential funding sources as well as stewarding relationships with existing funders, greater emphasis will be placed on writing proposals and preparing reports as needed for a range of funding opportunities. Additionally, the DPI Associate is accountable for maintaining accurate and current data in our proprietary CRM system and in supporting the broader data infrastructure used to convey the impact of Self-Help’s programs and initiatives.
WHAT You'll DO:
FUNDRAISING
- Serve as a key bridge between Self-Help and a broad and expanding network of public and private funders. Use prospect research and databases to identify potential new funding sources. Actively network with prospective and existing supporters that are particularly aligned with Self-Help’s mission, geographies, and programs to deepen relationships and identify potential opportunities for funding.
- Prepare and submit proposals to secure funding from aligned and prospective supporters.
- Represent the organization at local, state and national meetings and conferences in order to promote the work of Self-Help and to better understand trends and opportunities within the broader funding community.
- Maintain strong relationships with programmatic teams and key stakeholders throughout Self-Help in order to remain current on all existing and/or upcoming initiatives, particularly those that may be of interest to potential funders.
WRITING & DEVELOPMENT
- Develop effective grant proposals based on the funding requirements and Self-Help’s existing and projected activities. Will often require effective liaison work with the potential funder as well as programmatic and DPI leaders on the Self-Help side to ensure the proposed activity meets the needs of and makes sense to both parties.
- Write regular reports to comply with requirements on existing grants. Writing will often include research out databases for output and outcome information. Serve as principal point of contact between Self-Help and a selected portfolio of grant funders.
DATA & REPORTING
- Support the overall data infrastructure of the team by gaining mastery over the principal systems used to track and analyze data across all of our programs and initiatives.
- Tabulate and analyze performance-related program data; and compile information to produce descriptive and data-based reports for funders and investors.
- Develop data and reports as needed for funding proposals.
- Maintain accurate and current funder information within Salesforce CRM.
OTHER
- Contribute to a wide range of team-related activities including support for DPI policy work, strategic communications, special event planning, and other miscellaneous tasks.
- Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.
WHAT You’ll N EED :
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience in writing grant proposals and securing grants a plus
- Strong commitment to our mission – creating economic opportunity for all.
- Preference for working in organizations that place priority on teamwork and collaboration
- Ability to utilize all forms of social media as well as working knowledge and experience with Salesforce, Word, Excel, and Power Point.
- Understanding of databases from an information-user perspective and appreciation for the role data plays in telling the story of our impact. SQL query and report writing experience or interest a plus.
- Self-starter able to initiate and coordinate numerous activities with a minimum of supervision and ability to learn quickly.
- Excellent written, verbal and public speaking communication skills. Strong editing and proofreading skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.
- Keen attention to detail; strong organizational skills and ability to effectively plan and prioritize work independently and to meet deadlines.
- Ability to form and maintain strong and trusting relationships, and exercise discretion, with internal and external partners.
- Ability to effectively respond to questions and present information individually as well in in front of groups.
- Ability and willingness to work beyond normal work hours, as needed.

Compensation:
Competitive nonprofit compensation, based on experience, plus a generous benefits package. Compensation ranges for each position are based on local market rates and will be determined by geography, role, and experience .
Salary range for Oakland, CA: $104,100 - $156,100
Salary range for Chicago, IL: $87,000 - $130,500
