What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sewing Machine Service Technician - Will Train position at Select Sewing?
Job Title: Service Technician
Location: Select Sewing, 2415 E 65th St, Indianapolis, IN 46220
Schedule: Full-time | Some Saturdays required
About Us
At Select Sewing, we have been helping makers, quilters, and crafters bring their ideas to life since 1953. We are an authorized dealer and authorized service center for SINGER, Husqvarna VIKING, PFAFF, Baby Lock, and Reliable. Our Indianapolis store is family-owned and takes pride in honest repairs, clear communication, and getting people back to sewing.
Role Overview
We are looking for a hands-on Service Technician who likes solving problems and talking with customers in plain language. You will diagnose and repair sewing, embroidery, and serger machines, complete clean-and-tune services, and help customers understand what their machine needs, what it will cost, and when it will be ready.
Sewing machine experience is a plus, not a requirement. If you already repair electromechanical equipment and you want to learn this trade, we will train you. There is a path to factory certification on our dealer brands as you grow in the role.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet customers at intake, create work-order tickets, label machines, and verify accessories.
- Diagnose and repair sewing, serger, and embroidery machines, mechanical and computerized. That includes timing, tension, feed systems, motors, sensors, and electronics.
- Complete clean, oil, and adjust services, then run stitch or embroidery test patterns before a machine goes home.
- Document notes, parts, and labor accurately on warranty and non-warranty work.
- Order and track parts, and work with vendors on escalations and service bulletins.
- Explain findings, estimates, timelines, and care tips in everyday language.
- Keep the service bench organized and follow store safety and manufacturer practices.
- Help with in-store setups such as firmware updates, calibration, and accessory installs when needed.
- Work some Saturday hours based on store needs.
What We’re Looking For
- A friendly, steady personality and genuine respect for the people who trust us with their machines.
- Technical aptitude with electromechanical repair. Appliance, small engine, printer, musical gear, or similar work transfers well. Sewing machine experience is a plus. Training is provided.
- Comfort following checklists, documenting work thoroughly, and managing more than one ticket at a time.
- Honest estimates, careful workmanship, and clear communication.
- A problem solver who likes learning new models, service bulletins, and firmware procedures.
- Comfort using hand tools and meters. Ability to lift and move machines up to 50 pounds and stand for bench work.
- Factory certification on Baby Lock, PFAFF, or Husqvarna VIKING, or prior service-center experience, is a bonus. Not required.
Compensation
- Base hourly rate of $14-$22 per hour, depending on experience.
- Uncapped commission on service work you complete.
- Additional commission on any sales you write in the showroom.
- Team members can earn about $17-$25 per hour when base and commission are combined.
Why Work Here
- Join a fun, creative team that takes service seriously and still likes coming to work.
- Learn a skilled trade with a path to factory certification on the brands we sell.
- Enjoy a generous team member discount on machines, service, notions, and accessories.
- Full-time team members become eligible for paid time off and paid holidays after one year with Select Sewing.
- Work alongside a crew that genuinely loves helping the Indianapolis sewing community.
